North Carolina Governor’s School – 2017 Theater Audition – Monologue One Choices Theater auditions for the 2017 North Carolina Governor’s School will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at Meredith College in Raleigh. Only a student whose nomination has been sent by their public school system, charter school, special school or private school to the Office of the North Carolina Governor’s School may audition. Each of these students will receive an official audition invitation letter in January. The audition consists of: Monologue One, Monologue Two, and interview questions. Other important details are at http://www.ncgovschool.org/nomination/theater or Pages 7-8 of the Nomination Packet. Monologue One Instructions: Please select one of the following to memorize, prepare, and present. The following are neutral monologues, meaning they are not from plays and are open to multiple interpretations. However, it is important to memorize your monologue accurately; do not ‘ad lib.’ DO NOT bring costumes or props. In preparing a good audition, it is strongly recommended that you answer the following (among other) questions: Who am I? Where am I? To whom am I speaking? What do I want from him/her/them? Choice #1 No, it's not a problem. No, really, I'm fine. I'm ok. I'm calm. I'm not worried. I mean, yes, I'm a little worried, aren't you? We're in a little bit of a jam here. Can we get lunch then tomorrow—no, too public—can we meet at the park to talk about this? I mean, there are a lot of things we need to think about. What are we going to do with everything? The furniture, the TV, the clothes, the silverware, the jewelry, the money, the dog! I didn't want the dog in the first place! Why did we decide on the dog!? I mean— Spencer... Oh my god, Spencer! We're going to have to tell him because he's going to find out soon enough. He'll be waiting for us by now. How are we going to explain this? God, this is such a wreck! No, you know what, I'm not fine. I am not “ok.” This used to mean something. I don't know how (well, I know HOW), but everything has gotten so messed up, and we need to sit down and figure this out. Now. Choice #2 Can we decide on one at least? I don't think we need more disappointment right now. Now, the white one or the fluffy-looking one with the...uh...fun stripe pattern? Please. Or are either of them any good at all? I don't know. Why are we even shopping for... Look, I know you're upset right now, and I know you've had a long day—lord knows I have too—, but a smile wouldn't hurt. Look where we are! I think it would do us both good. Forward motion. Here, remember when— Hey, come on, look! Remember that bench over there when Carson had the mayo incident of 2012. Ha! Running around screaming, “Get it off! Get it off! I'm all creamy!” I had no idea he could move that quickly. And that old lady screaming for him to get away! See. I'm sure we'll get through this, even if I have to make this next decision alone. I pick that sad looking one they just dropped on the floor. Maybe we can get a discount. Choice #3 Welcome fellow wo-- individuals! I'm glad you could all make it on this day, today. And I'm equally glad you elected me to represent you in the coming challenges we will face. Nothing could bring me more joy. You all know where I come from, where I grew up, where I went to school, the town I come from. If that doesn't speak to you of my credentials, I don't know what will. You all believe that this issue cannot be ignored any longer, so here I am to stand with you! I have seen things in my life. And I tell you, while others may have the money, the power, and the means, we have our voices. Our voices. So first off, can we get my face off this big poster here and fill it instead with the voices of all of us, not just mine. Let those voices be heard. Let us march! Together forever! Forward not back! And more!
