1. When will the changes in the elementary boundary lines take place? Answer: The changes in the elementary boundary lines will take place next school year. 2. Why are the boundary lines being changed? Answer The boundary lines are being changed in order make the three elementary schools more evenly populated. There are currently 668 students at Charles Evans, 250 students at Jefferson and 291 students at Lincoln. In 2013, the Board of Education set long-range goals for many areas within the district. One of those was to reduce Charles Evans to serve a max of 500 students, renovate and add classrooms at Jefferson and to build a new Lincoln Elementary with a larger student capacity. With the Jefferson remodel/addition complete and the new Lincoln Elementary, the district can now reduce the number of students at Charles Evans. Both Jefferson and Lincoln were made larger in order to make Charles Evans smaller. This rezoning would leave Charles Evans with approximately 420 students, Jefferson with 363 students and Lincoln with 408 students. 3. Why did you redraw the lines where you did? Answer When we redraw boundary lines, we try our best to make the changes across major streets. So step one was to identify the major streets where breaks could th be made. We started with 12 Street and Sam Noble Parkway for the north|south line. The next major street would be North Washington. Let’s look at the Zone 1 area first: As you can see, Zone 1 would be the first area to look at. There are 125 students living in Zone 1 who are currently assigned to Charles Evans. Zone 1 is north of the existing Jefferson attendance area. With Jefferson’s classroom addition and remodel, those 125 students would provide Jefferson with a more equitable student population of around 363, leaving room for growth. th As you can see by the map below, the areas west of North Washington and South of 12 Street would be the next areas to review [2, 3B & 3A]. There are approximately 151 students residing within these 3 zones, which is too many to send to Lincoln. So we took another step to break those areas at major streets. Zone 2 and 3B are separated by E Street NW. Zones 3B and 3A were separated by G Street NW. The student population in Zones 2 and 3B allow for a more equitable population of around 408 at Lincoln. Zone 3A would remain at Charles Evans, giving them a student population of around 420. 4. I live in Zone 1. My child has always gone to Charles Evans and we don’t want to change. Can I stay? Answer Maybe. There will be some wiggle room at each school for “in-district” transfers, just as we do each year now. As a reminder, the process for that is for you to enroll at your home site and then apply for the in-district transfer to a different school while you are at enrollment. Reminder: If granted the in-district transfer, it is only good for one school year. Parents must reapply each year. 5. We live in the Jefferson attendance area and my kids have always transferred out of Jefferson into Charles Evans. Will we be able to do that again? Answer Maybe. There will be some wiggle room at each school for “in-district” transfers, just as we do each year now. As a reminder, the process for that is for you to enroll at your home site and then apply for the in-district transfer to a different school while you are at enrollment. Reminder: If granted the in-district transfer, it is only good for one school year. Parents must reapply each year. 6. I live in Zone 2 and I have been approved for an in-district transfer to stay at Charles Evans. Will my child still be able to ride the bus? Answer No. The bus routes will have been redrawn. Parents granted an in-district transfer sign that they understand that no transportation is available for in-district transfers. 7. th I have a 5 grader who would like to finish out at Charles Evans but we live in Zone 3B. Can he do that? Answer More than likely. Visit with your principal before the summer break. 8. th st I have a 5 grade who would like to finish out at Charles Evans, but I also have a 1 grader. What are my options? Answer th st More than likely your 5 grader could finish out at Charles Evans, but we would encourage you to start your 1 grader off attending the school in your new attendance area.
