Workshop 1 - English Language Partners

English Language Groups 2015:
views through many lenses
The Learner lens
what’s a learner’s experience of an ELG?
I know what
this
programme
does and
doesn’t offer
I understand what
is expected of me in
this programme
Post-It Thought 1
I didn’t know that…..
The teacher lens
what does an ELG teacher look like?
I am a
professional
reflective
educator
I provide an excellent
service for my ELG
learners
Reflective Practice – or
how we ‘Sit and Think’
- a few observations on ELP Hutt’s experience so far
- Merran Bakker,
May 2015
Kolb’s experiential learning cycle
Gibb’s reflective cycle
Why do Self Reflection?
• this process will ensure we MAKE TIME to
evaluate/ponder/affirm the teaching role
• it is a valuable tool for receiving input from
others in what can be a sometimes isolated
work environment
• a great opportunity to focus on
areas/behaviours which we may not have
been aware of previously
For peers:
• the teacher can receive feedback on their
teaching from a different perspective (often
our feedback is from our learners - but they
are limited to type of feedback they can
provide)
• your peers understand the complexities of
teaching - or the particular demands of a
programme and can offer insights and
suggestions based on experience
For learners
• informs and encourages better practice
• there is more potential to deliver teaching
more specifically targeted to individual
learners
Feedback model
Small group of 3-4
• Person A – briefly outlines issue (2 minutes)
• Peers - listen in silence
• Person A – self-feedback (1 minute)
• Peers – take turns to give feedback, both positive
affirmation and constructive criticism (1 minute
each)
• Person A – summarises what they learned from
hearing the feedback and what they would do
differently next time (1 minute)

Set up sustainable ways of doing RP
It’s a work in progress, but ‘sitting and
thinking’ is not a punishment, but a chance to
do better next time!
Post-It Thought 2
As part of my work, I already provide
evidence of………….
The centre lens
What do we do for our ELG programme?
We offer a
quality ELG

can prove it
We are
innovative, on
the ball and up
to date with
local and
national issues
Post-It Thought 3

The great big wide telephoto lens
What does the operating environment look like?
Contestable
