Description of Scientific/Educational Impact:
The course helped in developing better insight on interdisciplinary practice and current trends in the intervention of
Stroke among participants. Followed by the demonstration, all the participants had not only better understanding on
the orthotic and therapeutic management for stroke but also enhanced their belief on multi-disciplinary approach.
During the demonstration, a lady who have not been able to stand independently could walk unaided as a result of
an orthosis of good fitment and better coordination among the rehabilitation team to treat the client. Senior doctors
and policy makers also attended the course also realised the importance of involving the team and the client in
making the service better.
As an achievement, the P&O, PT and OTs at Rehabilitation and Rheumatology Hospital (RRH) at Ragama are
planning to form special groups (in order to have better communication on each clients) for the stroke patients at
RRH.

Evaluation of the Course by the Participants or general feedback (if available):
Dr. Munidasa (Consultant, Rheumatologist and Medical Rehabilitation, Rheumatology & Rehabilitation
Hospital, Ragama) shared, “I am thankful to HI and ISPO for organising ISPO workshop in Sri Lanka. This is very
useful for all our team. The theoretical training was a bit higher for our team as they have basic training but it was
very good to upgrade it. Hands on training was well organised and in future I think, probably we need less theory
and more practical”.
Ms. Baminy Kanagaradnam (Prosthetist & Orthotist, Sri Lanka School of Prosthetics and Orthotics –
Ragama) joyously recalled, “We got a lot of information during this 3 days training. The training was very helpful
as Prosthetist and Orthotist and we gained knowledge on how working as a team for stroke rehabilitation brings
positive results. We need to avoid working in isolation for the better outcome for patients”.
Did any graduates from an ISPO-recognized course give a lecture?
Yes, Mr. Uthpala Mihiran qualified as an ISPO qualified CAT - II Prosthetist & Orthotist in 2008 as a member of
first batch of SLSPO (Sri Lanka School of Prosthetics and Orthotics).
