Aleck Yang* Botanical Garden & TNM Herbarium, National Museum of Natural Science, Taichung 404, Taiwan, R.O.C. ABSTRACT The herbarium of the Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg (LE) is one of the three largest herbaria in the world. The LE is the principal herbarium where Dr. C.J. Maximowicz deposited his types. The present work has located 85 type specimens of 38 different species in Taiwan named by Dr. C.J. Maximowicz and provided digitized images for them. The checklist begins with Pteridophytes, followed by Angiosperm families that are arranged alphabetically. Key words: LE, Maximowicz, Taiwan, Type specimen, vascular plant. *Corresponding author. PUBL. No. 10 INTRODUCTION in Taiwan named by Dr. Maximowicz were photographed. Komarov Botanical Institute of the Russian RESULTS Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg (LE) is one of the three largest herbaria in the world. Based on the 8th ed. ņIndex HerbariorumŇ (Holmgren et These amounted to 85 type specimens of 38 al., 1990) there are almost 6,000,000 specimens at different species belonging to 28 families and 34 LE, and has a collection of type specimens of at genera. The checklist of species has been divided least 1,300 species from China (including into Pteridophytes and Angiosperms arranged in Taiwan), about 490 species from Japan and about Family order. The checklist follows: 130 species from Korea (personal communication A. Pteridophytes with Dr. A. Borodina-Grabovskaja). Among the important collectors, Dr. Carl Johann Maximowicz is one of the principal collectors and describers of 1. Lycopodiaceae Asian vascular plants. Maximowicz was one of 1. Lycopodium cryptomerianum Maxim. in Bull. the most important collectors at LE who studied Acad. Imp. Sci. St. Petersb. 15: 231. 1870. Eastern Asian plants, including some vascular (Figures 1-4.) plants from Taiwan. B. Angiosperms Dr. C.J. Maximowicz (1827-1891) was the Curator of the Chinese-Japanese Section at LE. He spent much time traveling around Russian Far East and NE China (including Amur, Ussuri and Sungari regions), also NW China, Mongolia and Japan (Stafleu and Cowan, 1981). In these areas, 2. Dischidia formosana Maxim. in Bull. Acad. for example, in Japan at least 487 taxa (i.e. 367 Imp. Sci. St. Petersb. 23: 385. 1877. (Figure species and 120 varieties) were named by 6.) Maximowicz, also including several specimens collected from Taiwan. The author visited LE for herbarium work between 23rd and 30th of June 2001, with financial support from The Foundation of National 4. Caprifoliaceae 4. Viburnum furcatum Blume ex Maxim. in Bull.
