Option Subjects GCSE PE/BTEC Sport Level 2 Staff Contact: Miss C Johnson ([email protected]) Students who select this curriculum area and will study EITHER a GCSE route or a BTEC route GCSE PE COURSE CONTENT:Theory: - 60% of the total grade. 2 written exams. Paper 1 is 1 hour 45 minutes (36% of the qualification) Anatomy & Physiology Movement Analysis Physical Training Use of Data Paper 2 is 1 hour 15 minutes (24% of the qualification) Health, Fitness and well-being Sport Psychology Socio-Cultural influences Use of Data Practical:- 30% of the total grade. Students will be assessed in three activities. One activity must be a team sport, one an individual sport and the final activity can be a free choice. All three sports will be assessed in Year 11 by the teacher and / or the external moderator. Coursework: - 10% of the total grade. This document is worth 20 marks and the assessment consists of students producing a Personal Exercise Programme (PEP), and will require students to analyse and evaluate their performance. This will be assessed by the teacher and external moderator. Assessment including terminal examinations and controlled assessments: Students will have termly exams throughout the two year course to check progress been made. Each termly exam will focus on the topics been taught that term. At the end of the year all students will complete a full exam. Students will also complete their Level 1 Sports Leaders Qualification as part of the GCSE PE course. Examples of learning activities (e.g. offsite visits; group learning; research; use of ICT etc.) There will be a number of opportunities for students to work in groups and complete group challenges and tasks as part of their learning experience. ICT is used in many of the lessons as part of virtual learning or completing coursework. Students will be involved in a number of offsite tasks, such as swimming, kayaking and skiing. Option Subjects GCSE PE/BTEC Sport Level 2 (continued) BTEC COURSE CONTENT:The Pearson BTEC Level 1/Level 2 First Award in Sport is taught over 120 guided learning hours (GLH). It has core and optional specialist units. The course is a mixture of practical and theoretical learning and is a vocational course relevant to the world of work. Learners must complete the two core units, and a choice of optional units to reach a total of 120 GLH. This BTEC First Award has units that the centre assesses (internal) and a unit that Pearson sets and marks (external) this is in the form of a 1 hour examination. Core Units that are compulsory 1 Fitness for Sport and Exercise External (30GLH) This unit is examined 2 Practical Sports Performance Internal (30 GLH) Optional specialist units (students will study two of these which are internally assessed and externally moderated) 3 The Mind and Sports Performance Internal (30 GLH) 4 The Sports Performer in Action Internal (30 GLH) 5 Training for Personal Fitness Internal (30 GLH) 6 Leading Sports Activities Internal (30 GLH) Assessment including terminal examinations and controlled assessments: The Unit 1 ‘Fitness for Sport’ is examined with a 1 hour exam which is externally marked The other three units are internally marked and externally moderated Examples of learning activities (e.g. offsite visits; group learning; research; use of ICT etc.) Practical- Fitness training and testing Visits to fitness centres Exercise safety sessions Visiting coaches and instructors delivering sessions Leadership of fitness activities and events Organising sports/fitness events for Primary schools The overall grade attained will be either: Level 2 pass (equivalent to Grade 4) Level 2 Merit (equivalent to Grade 5.5) Level 2 Distinction (equivalent to Grade 7) Level 2 Distinction* (equivalent to Grade 8.5) Students who do not secure a Level 2 pass mark in the exam (Unit 1) can repeat the exam again. A Level 1 qualification can still be gained if the Unit 1 mark is below a Level 2 pass
