QUARTER 3 PROJECTS For your next novel project, you will choose from the menu below. You must complete a combination of 50 points worth of activities. This will be a double grade in the grade book; so, in essence, it will be worth 100 points. You may do no more than one of each type, and at least one must be presented (**) to the class. All items are possible to be completed over one novel. All final projects are to be turned in or ready to present by Friday, Mar. 7. NOTE: THIS WILL REQUIRE TIME SPENT AT HOME!! I will accept up to 10 points extra credit. For example, you may choose the three 20 point projects and count anything between 51 and 60 as extra credit. Deductions are taken for not completing all requirements, spelling errors, grammar, usage, capitalization and punctuation errors, and lateness. IT IS STRONGLY ADVISABLE THAT ONE PROJECT BE IN BY FEB. 12. This will assist both of us. 1. Power point/keynote/prezi presentation----You will need at least 10 frames. The first frame is to be a title page (frame) with the following information: your name, the title of your book, and the author’s name. Then you will need to explore/discuss the following areas concerning the book: 1) characterswho they are and what their traits are, 2) setting-where and when, 3) plot summary-main events in order, 4) point of view (who is telling the story,) and how that impacts the story 5) analyze theme-use specific examples, 6) conflicts-explain the main conflicts and how they are resolved, 7) memorable quote- character and why it’s important, 8) a picture that represents something important. There is no paper to turn in for this project; simply email me your project or we will show it off your iPad. The presentation needs to have graphics; music would be great if you know how. THE MORE CREATIVE THE BETTER!!!! This is worth 25 points. ** 2. Pretend that you are a talk show host. Write a series of questions you would ask a particular character from your story. Then, create your talk show. You will do this by creating an iMovie. Get some of your family members or friends to participate in the show. Have one person act as the talk show host; YOU will need to be the character. Have them ask you the questions you created over the book. In the interview, you would answer the questions as if you were the character from the book. You also need to be dressed as the character would be dressed. You will turn in your interview questions: at least 15 questions which are open-ended (not just a one or two word answer.) You could also do this live in front of the class if you are not able to take your iPad home. This is worth 25 points. ** 3. Make a scrapbook for your main character. Think about all the kinds of mementos that you would put in a scrapbook if you had one. Then make a scrapbook for your character cutting out pictures from magazines or drawing the mementos he or she would have in a scrapbook. If you have items at home you think your character would have in his/her scrapbook, you could use those things also. You don’t just have to draw the items or cut out the pictures from magazines. You must also include three journal entries from the character’s point of view, and pictures of mementos symbolizing the following: main character in a scene from the book, the setting of the story, other characters in the book, pictures which detail elements of the book’s plot, something that symbolizes the theme. Please be sure to do this in an actual scrapbook format and include captions with each entry. Design a cover for it as well. Please use construction paper or heavy art paper for this project, no lined notebook paper. You will present this to the class and explain the items. This is worth 25 points. ** 4. Create a test over the book. Include 10 true/false questions, 10 multiple choice questions, and 5 constructed response (CR) questions. This may be submitted to me either on paper or electronically. In addition, you must include an answer key. This is worth 20 points. 5. Make a dictionary of 20 unfamiliar terms you encounter in your novel. For this project, you will look through your book and make a list of important, specialized, or troublesome words. They should be words with which you are unfamiliar. Then look up each word in the dictionary. Include the following in your dictionary: 1) the definition that relates to the book, 2) a synonym, and 3) use the word correctly in a sentence. This is worth 20 points. 6. Create a poster-sized character. This project will need to be done on standard sized poster board or some type of paper about that size. This is worth 15 points and will be presented to the class. ** Follow these directions: 1. Put the character’s name at the top of the page. 2. Decorate the character in the clothes he or she might wear, and show physical features described in the story. 3. Use the five senses to explain what the character feels, hears, tastes, smells, and sees. 4. List some of the thoughts of the character by his or her brain. 5. Put significant quotes of the character by his or her mouth. 6. List what he or she does besides the hands. 7. List where he or she goes by the feet. 8. List his or her emotions by the heart. 9. In the lower right corner, put the book title, author’s name and your name. 10. Include anything else you might think of. 7. You may create a “hang up” over your book. You will need at least six 5 x 8 unlined note cards. (Use the back of lined cards if you cannot find unlined.) The cards will show the following information in order: 1) title, author, and genre [science fiction/fantasy/realistic fiction/biography etc.], 2) a summary of the book, 3) theme analysis—what is the theme, what examples from the text show the theme, 4) notable quote from the book—include what character said it and why it is important, 5) favorite scene—description and explanation of why it is your favorite, 6) illustration from the book. The cards will then be assembled, hanging one from the other in the order listed, using yarn, string, or some other type of fastener. The cards must be neat and colorful. This is worth 20 points. 8. Create a commercial or movie trailer for the book you read. Create a script, recruit actors, create props and costumes, practice, then either film or plan to present to the class live (about 3-4 min.) This is worth 25 points. ** 9. Determine the top three scenes from the book. For each scene, write an effective summary of the scene, an explanation as to why this scene was chosen, and an explanation of your thinking or emotional response to this passage. This is worth 15 points. Dear parents, Students will have a menu of choices from which to choose over a book they chose which they are CURRENTLY reading. These choices are varied and worth a differing amount of points. They are to choose a combination of projects to equal at least 50 points. I will accept up to 10 points over and points will be doubled in the grade book. This project is EXPECTED to be completed at home, in part, as a preparation for high school. Also, students are expected to choose at least one project to be presented to the class. Please look through the menu choices with your child and discuss the choices including what materials may be necessary. Have your child determine which projects they plan on completing, then both of you fill out the information at the bottom and sign.
