Math: Leaf Tessellations

Math: Leaf Tessellations
Integrate math and art by changing a geometric shape into a
lively leaf that tessellates!
Materials:
scissors, 12” x 18” sheet of white construction paper, tape,
pencil, 4” tagboard square, crayons
Steps:
1. Lightly color the tagboard square. This will help you
remember to keep the colored side up as you work.
2. Using curved cuts, carefully cut a section from the top of
the square as shown.
3. Slide the cut-out section to the bottom of the square. (Do
not flip it!) Match the edges; then tape them securely.
4. Cut a section from the right side of the square as shown.
5. Slide the cut-out section to the left of the square. (Do not
flip it!) Match the edges; then tape them securely.
6. Place the tile (leaf) in the center of the white paper; then
trace it with a pencil.
7. Slide the tile (up, down, right, or left) and match its edge
with the tracing. Make another tracing.
8. Continue sliding and tracing until you cover your paper
with shapes.
9. Draw details on each shape, making sure to add the same
details to each shape. Color the shapes to complete the
project.
