GD PHYSICAL SCIENCE PLACEMENT APPLICATION Class of 2021 Application for Placement into Honors Biology In order to ensure student success in not only their freshmen year studies, but also subsequent science courses, students requesting placement into Honors Biology, without being first placed into Honors Geometry, will be required to meet the following criteria: Previous study in a physical science type course, with a transcript reflecting an ‘A’ grade Passing a physical science content and skills assessment with a score of 85% or higher By completing and returning this form, you are requesting that a test be set aside for the student to attempt. Tests will be taken after school from approximately 3:15-4:15 pm on Tuesday, May 9 and Wednesday, May 10, 2017 in Girls Division room 203. Please indicate on this form which day the student is coming in, so the proper number of tests are available. Cancellation is requested 24 hours in advance of the testing day. Outline of Skills and Content to be Assessed on the Regis Jesuit Girls Division Physical Science Assessment In order to ensure student success in not only their freshmen year studies, but also subsequent science courses, the following skills and content areas will be assessed in a 30 multiple choice, and 10 short-answer format, over a 60-minute period. Students receiving a passing score of 85% or higher, contingent with documented, successful completion of a previous physical science course with an ‘A’ grade, will be exempted from physical science, and automatically enrolled in Honors Biology. In order to evaluate the student’s general scientific skills, the student will be asked to: 1. Interpret and analyze information presented in graphical and tabular form 2. Gather information from a reading passage, and apply that information in light of a scientific experiment. 3. Identify the components of a scientific investigation (i.e differentiate between a dependent, independent and control variable) and refine or correct a suggested scientific study 4. Propose a scientific protocol in order to test a specific variable. 5. Convert between metric and English units, and within the metric system (conversion guide will be provided for reference) 6. Identify proper laboratory-safety technique and proper use of scientific equipment.
