Breaking News Save Energy: Instructional video written and produced by fifth
grade Ecology Club members. Shown to all KCE students during library classes to
kick of energy conservation month and entered in regional and state STLP
showcases.
Newscast starts with “Breaking News WKCE Save Energy News” and evening news music. Shot
goes to Susan and Sebastian wearing ties and holding mugs.
Susan: Hi, I’m Susan R----Sebastian: And I’m Sebastian H---Both: And this is Save Energy News!
Sebastian: Sorry to interrupt library time, but I’ve just got a call from our main reporter Julia
R—about how our school can save energy.
Susan: Did you know that if someone turns a light off that they are not using for just a couple of
minutes they could save both energy and money?
Sebastian: Lighting is tied for second place among the biggest energy users in the average
person’s home.
Susan: Now let’s go to our reporter Julia for an interview with our energy experts

Julia: Thank you Susan! I’m here with energy experts, Dr. Watt’s and Ivgon Green. They’re
going to answer some questions about the use of energy in our school. Our first question for you
today is, what are some easy things we can do to cut down on the use of energy?
Ryan and Hunter: TURN OFF SCHOOL LIGHTS!!!
Julia: Just like that, huh?
Julia: Next question. Does it help to turn computers off when you are not using them?
Ryan: Yes, but at school we cannot turn the computer off because of periodic updates. But what
we can do is log off the computer and turn off the monitor which will initiate sleep or stand-by
mode. This will reduce the amount of energy consumed.
Julia: There’s a rumor going around that Kit Carson spends $19,000 a year on electricity for
lighting. Is that true?
Hunter: Our source says that you are correct.
Julia: Amazing! What about heating costs?
Ryan: Of course! Instead of turning up the thermostat, we should put on a hoodie. This is a
great way to save energy and our natural resources.

Julia: Last question. Why should we close windows and blinds?
Ryan: The heating and air conditioning system for our school was designed so that the windows
never need to be opened. Follow these rules.
Hunter: 1. Open the blinds during the day and close blinds at night. 2. Keep the windows closed
at all times.
Julia: Thanks for joining us Dr. Watts and Ivgon Green! Back to you Susan and Sebastian.
Sebastian: Thank you Julia! Our time is almost up so we will share a couple more facts about
energy use in your community.
Susan: Alright. If you turn your thermostat down just a couple of degrees in the winter and up a
couple of degrees in the summer for just a few months, you will save fossil fuels and money.
Well that’s all for now folks! See you next time on..
Both: Save Energy News!
