Case Study Training Programme Written and designed by Donella Caspersz and Danielle Bejr for enactus Australia 2013 Developed by Donella Caspersz & Danielle Bejr, 2013 INTRODUCTION The case study training programme can act as a capstone learning and development programme for enactus students, faculty and key stakeholders such as the enactus BAB. The learning objectives of the module are to: 1. Assist enactus students identify and plan an enactus response to a community need (Tasks 1,2 & 3); 2. Provide the opportunity for enactus students to get some experience in developing and implementing an enactus presentation (Tasks 4, 5) 3. Provide the opportunity for enactus students, faculty and BAB to become familiar with the judging criteria by participating in the exercise (Tasks 4,5). The case study training programme has been developed to be implemented in one session if possible, see Appendix for a proposed breakdown of activity time. This may be done in one session, or may be broken into a few sessions. Each task has a stated aim and a description of a process that can be used to fulfil this aim. I have listed and made available the resources you can use at each step of the process. Powerpoints and worksheets are linked within the document, and can be accessed as required. A link to a survey has been attached both here at the end of the module to gather your feedback. If all participants can fill out this survey at the completion of the training module it would be greatly appreciated, as the information captured will be used to improve the training for the next year. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DSFPX6H Good luck, Donella Caspersz Developed by Donella Caspersz & Danielle Bejr, 2013 TASK 1 Understanding the Case Study Aim: To understand the nuances of the case study Process: A. Every student, faculty and BAB member should read the case study. B. Faculty or team president can facilitate a discussion using the following questions: 1. What are the main challenges facing the project? 2. What are the main challenges facing the enactus team? TASK 2 Preparing for the Case Study Aim: To conduct a preparation session for the case study presentation Process: A. Teams and Faculty are advised to review the resources available under ‘Resources’ on the enactus Australia website (see http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-development-modules/teammember-package/) as per the following: 1. Review what it means to work in the enactus programme, see ‘Understanding enactus’, http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-developmentmodules/team-member-package/ 2. Undertake a needs assessment exercise, see ‘Needs Assessment’ http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-developmentmodules/team-member-package/ 3. Understand the key stakeholders involved with an influencing the case study scenario, see “Engaging with Stakeholders” http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-developmentmodules/team-member-package/ B. Conduct a discussion using the following questions as a guide: What is the enactus ‘mission’? How does enactus conceptualise ‘need’? Who are the key enactus stakeholders involved in any project? TASK 3 Responding to an enactus need Aim: To clarify what an enactus ‘need’ is and give students the experience of developing a proposal that responds to an enactus need. Process: A. The following focus areas have been identified for the Case Study Training programme: (1) sustainability of the project, (2) sustainability of enactus team engagement in the project (3) Developing a self-help opportunity; and (4) developing an outer metropolitan service. B. Divide participants into four equal groups. C. Allocate one of the focus areas to each group. D. Using the description of the focus areas below, develop a presentation on ONE of the focus areas identified in line with the requirements for the enactus national conference, see “Showcasing at the National enactus Conference’ http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-development-modules/teammember-package/ Description of focus areas 1. Sustainability of the project: This refers to the sustainability of the project from the organisation or partners perspective i.e. how will the organisation continue to maintain and grow the project after enactus leaves? What are the recommendations your team has for how it can do this? In developing your presentation, consider HOW your proposed recommendations will assist you to DEMONSTRATE that you have met the enactus criteria. See ‘Measuring enactus Projects’ and http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learningdevelopment-modules/team-member-package/ 2. Sustainability of enactus team engagement in the project: The project has already grown and there is a question of for how long and at what level will the enactus team continue to be involved. In addressing this task you need to: a. Consider that your University has already given a ‘hand out’ in the form of a grant to the organisations. b. The status of your team membership. In developing your presentation, consider HOW your proposed recommendations will assist you to DEMONSTRATE that you have met the enactus criteria, See ‘Understanding enactus’, ‘Measuring enactus Projects” and Engaging with Stakeholders’ http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-developmentmodules/team-member-package/ Developed by Donella Caspersz & Danielle Bejr, 2013 You should also review ‘Using the Business Advisory Board Package’ module and consider how you could involve your BAB in this task, see http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-development-modules/businessadvisory-board-package/ 3. Developing a self-help opportunity: The community organisation has to demonstrate HOW it is assisting its clients to develop a self-help capability. This is a shift in orientation for the organisation. However, this focus is very aligned to the enactus philosophy of a ‘hand up’ rather than a ‘hand out’. In developing your presentation, consider HOW your proposed recommendations will assist you to DEMONSTRATE that you have met the enactus criteria, See ‘Understanding enactus’, ‘Measuring enactus Projects, and ‘Engaging with Stakeholders’ http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-developmentmodules/team-member-package/ You should also review ‘Using the Business Advisory Board Package’ module and consider how you could involve your BAB in this task, see http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-development-modules/businessadvisory-board-package/ 4. Developing an outer metropolitan service: The community organisation is keen to develop a service outside the metropolitan area. However, this NEW orientation has to reflect the new philosophy in grant funding. In addition, the status of your own team makes responding to this a challenging task. In developing your presentation, consider HOW your proposed recommendations will assist you to DEMONSTRATE that you have met the enactus criteria, See “Understanding enactus” and ‘Measuring enactus Projects”, http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-development-modules/teammember-package/ You should also review ‘Using the Business Advisory Board Package’ module and consider how you could involve your BAB in this task, see http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learning-development-modules/businessadvisory-board-package/ Developed by Donella Caspersz & Danielle Bejr, 2013 TASK 4 Responding to an enactus need Aim: To provide enactus students, faculty and BAB with the experience of presenting and judging an enactus project under enactus presentation conditions. Process: A. Develop a presentation schedule. B. Each team should review the enactus module “Showcasing at the National enactus Conference’ http://enactusaustralia.org.au/resources/learningdevelopment-modules/team-member-package/ C. Conduct the presentations in accordance with the enactus presentation requirements, which are as follows: Each team will have 17 minutes for their presentation and 3 minutes to set up. This will be followed by a 5 minute question time Total time for each team: 25 minutes. The Faculty Advisor should manage the time keeping and Q & A period. Ask non-presenting teams, faculty and any BAB present to use the judging sheet and score the team presentation (See page 67 of the enactus handbook). Ask any faculty and Bab to also use the cumulative score sheet to identify a presentation that excels (see page 69 of the enactus handbook) TASK 5 Debrief Aim: To debrief the experience with students, faculty and BAB. Process: A. Provide judging sheets to each team. B. Appoint a facilitator for each group to conduct a discussion using the following questions: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. What did you learn from this exercise? What would you do again? What would you change? How can the task of analysing need be improved? How can the presentation be improved? Developed by Donella Caspersz & Danielle Bejr, 2013 C. Re-group into a larger group and ask smaller groups to report back on their responses.
