Improving the working lives and social mobility of Latin American migrants. The project will make a real difference by supporting low paid workers to improve their lives by moving into better paid jobs and out of inwork poverty. The post-holder will be responsible for coordinating the project, providing advice and mentoring, liaising with employers and training providers, and supporting and training volunteers. ABOUT THE PROJECT Funded by Trust for London and the Walcot Foundation as part of the Step Up Programme, this new project will support over 100 low paid Latin Americans to build on their existing skills, experience and qualifications to improve their employment prospects through individualised advice and support, organising training and work placements and liaising with employers. There will be three main approaches: 1. supporting those with professional qualifications to gain work experience in their sector and get their qualifications recognised 2. supporting those with previous experience in construction and social care to get the necessary documents to work in the UK in these sectors 3. providing ongoing advice on labour rights and case work to deal with employment abuses and support campaigns to improve working conditions The project will build on IRMO’s existing work on employment and training and as such the post holder will be expected to work closely with other team members to ensure a joined up service. IRMO offers a holistic approach spanning four main areas: Education, training and employment including free English and IT classes, homework club for children, work readiness workshops, job-hunting and CV writing support Advice and advocacy on immigration, employment rights, housing, schooling and social welfare Wellbeing and empowerment: improved wellbeing through therapeutic groups and through a women's project Campaigning for the recognition of Latin Americans as a minority ethnic group and for the rights of migrants POSITION IN ORGANISATION Reports To: Lucia Vinzon, Director Responsible For: A team of 4+ volunteers Budget Responsibilities: Oversee and account for spend of project budget. Contract: Full time, fixed term till September 2017 (subject to 6 months probationary period) – job share available Pay: £21,545 gross per annum DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Employment support Work with individuals to create Personal Development Plans and identify training needs and pathways towards qualification recognition. Deliver fortnightly mentoring/advice sessions to beneficiaries to review progress against Personal Development Plans. Organise volunteer placements, apprenticeships and work placements for beneficiaries. Identify relevant training opportunities and liaise with training organisations to negotiate referral arrangements for IRMO beneficiaries. Registered Charity no.1080813. Organise relevant in-house trainings and workshops. Deliver employability workshops (CV writing, interview techniques, job hunting, employment rights, development of soft skills, etc.) Develop contacts with local employers, particularly in construction and care sectors and build productive working relationships. Liaise with local employment support services such as Lambeth Working, Southwark Works, Skills for Care. Set up, support and coordinate peer-to-peer support groups for sector specific qualifications (particularly in construction and care sectors). Work with union representatives to ensure that beneficiaries are aware of their employment rights and to support people willing to organise themselves to improve working conditions Recruit participants for the project. Promote all activities through the web page, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, flyers, posters, newsletters in the centre. Promote activities through outreach with other organisations including local Latin American businesses and other local charities. Budget Oversee spend of budget, provide regular financial updates to Director. Develop criteria for the provision of individual training grants, and oversee the allocation of such grants. Volunteer support Interview, select, train and work with 4+ volunteers for the project. Hold regular meetings with volunteers to follow up on specific cases. Identify volunteer training needs and organise training. Project management and evaluation Create and maintain (in collaboration with the Director) adequate mechanisms for collecting employment data in line with the Data Protection Act. Carry out project risk assessment. Write progress reports for funders. Participate in collaborative learning and evaluation sessions with funders and partner organisations. Other responsibilities Seek out opportunities for developing and enhancing the project. Contribute to fundraising applications where asked to.
