What is voltage
optimisation?
Quite simply put, voltage optimisation is to reduce
the supply voltage applied to a single piece of
equipment or machinery, a lighting system, a
specific area within a building or an entire building. If
the reduction in supply voltage is carefully matched
to the needs of the connected electrical equipment
it is possible to make a substantial energy saving
and extend the life expectancy of the connected
equipment.
Why can the voltage be
reduced?
The electrical supply voltage in the UK is much
higher than in Europe: 235-245v in the UK,
compared with 220-230v across Europe. However
all electrical equipment designed for use in
Europe and the UK, must be capable of operating
throughout the entire voltage range to comply with
current CE regulations. A large proportion of this
equipment consumes more energy the higher the
supply voltage applied to it. Therefore, it makes
sense to reduce the supply voltage nearer to those
found across Europe, in order to make substantial
energy savings.
ECO-MAX power and lighting optimisers
intelligently monitor your incoming supply voltage
and automatically reduce it to an optimum level
dependant on pre programmed criteria, in order to
maximise your energy saving.
Why isn’t electricity supplied
at the lower voltages if it
saves energy?
Unfortunately, in the UK the electrical supply
infrastructure has been historically designed
to operate at 240v. This reduces transmission
losses and helps maintain the supply voltage for
all consumers over large transmission distances,
and during periods of heavy demand. Therefore the
electricity supply companies have no alternative
but to generate at the top end of the legal voltage
range agreed for all European countries. In fact, the
average voltage experienced by UK consumers is
242v. ECO-MAX overcomes and exploits this by
optimising your voltage locally within your building.
The voltage scale below shows the relationship
between energy consumption and equipment
life, along with the savings potential of ECO-MAX
optimisers.

So how much will I save with ECO-MAX?
High energy saving with these
types of equipment:
Modest energy saving with
these types of equipment:
Typically 20%-50%
• Switch Start Fluorescent
Lighting, (with magnetic
ballast)
• Discharge Lighting, with SON
Metal Halide or Mercury
Lamps & magnetic ballast
• Lighting with compact
fluorescent lamps & magnetic
ballast
• Tungsten halogen lighting
• Fixed Speed Motors that
are not fully loaded i.e. air
conditioning, refrigeration,
pumps & fans
Although it is true to say that
the higher your supply voltage,
the greater the potential for
savings using ECO-MAX, it
doesn’t necessarily mean that if
your supply voltage is high you
will make a large energy saving.
Unfortunately different types
of electrical equipment deliver
different levels of energy saving
for the same reduction in voltage.
Sites where the majority of
electrical consumption is made
up of items listed in the green
box above, will make the largest
energy savings, sites where the
majority of equipment is listed in
the red box will make the lowest
energy saving
Typically 10%-15%
Typically 0%-5%
• Fixed speed heavily loaded
motors
• Some older types of IT
equipment, VDU’s and TV’s
• None thermostatically
controlled heating e.g towel
rails, hand dryers, hair dryers
and certain types of electric
heating.
Building Type
• High Frequency (HF) Lighting
• Some IT Equipment
• Motors with VSD’s
• Thermostatically controlled
heating e.g. kettles & ovens

Therefore, on some sites it may
make more sense to optimise
the voltage to just the lighting,
or a specific area, rather than
the entire building. The ‘one
box fits all approach’ pushed
by some companies certainly
does not always make for
successful Voltage Optimisation
projects. GWE always takes into
consideration the different kinds of
electrical equipment that you have
on site. Coupling this approach to
the unique modular construction
of ECO-MAX optimisers, allows
us to provide you with a tailored,
bespoke solution that maximises
your savings, at an “off the shelf”
price which reduces your payback.

ECO-MAX-POWER typically
saves 10%-25%
GWE’s power optimisers are used to optimise the voltage to a single piece of
equipment, localised area, or an entire building, dependant on the specifics of
the site.
• Reduces your electricity bill and carbon footprint by up to 25%
• Improves the life expectancy of your electrical equipment, which can
reduce maintenance cost
• Specific issues like harmonics, power factor problems and variable voltages
can be dealt with in the one unit
• Can pay for its self in under 12 months
• Fully guaranteed
• Custom built to order to match specific site requirements
ECO-MAX-LIGHTING typically saves 25%-50%
GWE’s lighting optimisers do much more than just voltage optimisation; they are comprehensive lighting control
systems, that combine voltage optimisation with traditional lighting control strategies, by using a variety of different
control modules.
• Reduces your electricity bill and carbon footprint by up to 50%
• No need to change any of your existing light fittings
• Lamps stay brighter and last longer
• Suitable for discharge lighting with magnetic ballasts
• Designed for large buildings such as warehouses and factories

Carbon Trust and Salix Funding
Many of our projects pay for themselves within one year, meaning that the money to finance a project is
already in the energy budget. Despite this many companies and organisations find it difficult to transfer
budgets from one pot to another. In these instances Carbon Trust or Salix funding may be the answer.
The carbon trust interest free loan scheme was set up to provide a funding incentive to private
organisations that invest in energy efficient equipment to reduce carbon emissions. Because ECO-MAX
optimisers significantly reduce energy consumption, and thus carbon emissions, organisations installing
ECO-MAX may qualify for an interest free loan from the Carbon Trust.
Monthly repayments are structured to be less than the financial gain form the energy saved each month.
So your cash flow is positive from day one. There are no arrangement fees and GWE will complete the
vast majority of the application for you.
For Public Sector financing, Salix was set up in conjunction with The Carbon Trust to provide funding on
a similar basis. Further information regarding criteria and the application process can be found by visiting
www.carbontrust.co.uk and www.salixfinance.co.uk.
Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA)
The Energy Technology List (ETL) forms the criteria of the Governments Enhanced Capital Allowance (ECA)
scheme which allows companies to claim 100% tax relief on ETL compliant projects. ECO-MAX-LIGHTING
optimisers can be configured to meet the requirements of the ETL and therefore would qualify for the ECA
scheme.
This means that the full costs of your project can be offset against the companies corporation tax,
providing a tax saving and cash flow boost in the year in which the project is completed. Full details of the
process can be found at www.eca.gov.uk/etl/claim/non-listed.htm.
ECO-MAX-LIGHTING optimisers also qualify for Accelerated Capital Allowance (ACA) in Ireland.
Who are GWE?
GWE has specialised in reducing electricity consumption and cost since 1994. We are based in Sheffield
where we developed the first ECO-MAX-LIGHTING optimisers back in 2000, specifically for use at Corus.
Since then the ECO-MAX product line has grown and grown, along with our impressive list of customers.
In 2009 GWE’s range of ECO-MAX Optimisers were awarded the prestigious ‘Made In Sheffield’ mark of
origin and quality.
