CASE STUDY: KIER GROUP
Energy Compliance Schemes in Safe Hands
The Group employs over 24,000 people
in its operations in the UK and overseas.
The UK portfolio is greater than 300 sites
consuming around 500 GWh of energy in
the United Kingdom.
“A SAFE PAIR OF HANDS”:
“As a large and complex company
we needed a partner who could
provide a wide range of services,
deliver them across a significant
contact network and handle the
technical detail throughout the
process – a “safe pair of hands”.
From day one it has been clear that
Energise could deliver what we
needed and they have played a key
part in the progress that we are
making towards our sustainability
goals.”

Kier Group plc
As a listed company, employing tens of
thousands of staff, and with a large and
diverse property portfolio to boot, the
Kier Group (Kier) is required to comply
with a myriad of UK Energy legislature
and schemes on an ongoing basis. As a
large organisation, Kier has to
participate in half a dozen different
schemes (inc. CRC, Mandatory GHG
Reporting and ESOS).
The management of these schemes, as
well as providing a significant
opportunity to the group also present a
significant risk if compliance is not
achieved, in the form of financial
penalty, lost opportunity and
reputational damage. With this in mind
Kier sought to partner to help both
eliminate this risk and maximise the
opportunity presented.
CHALLENGE
Kier is a leading property, construction
and services group. They operate across
a range of sectors including defence,
education, health, housing, industrials,
power, property, transport and utilities.
Kier recognised that to achieve
compliance in multiple schemes, as well
as seeking the necessary expert advice it
would need to take a pro-active
approach to energy data management.
The challenge set was to establish a
single system for data management,
incorporating financial, carbon and
management reporting. To add to this,
to progress internal requirements for
improved communication, the setup
required a helpdesk for queries within
the group to be directed to. To deliver
these requirements, Kier appointed
Energise.
“Kier conducted an extensive tender
exercise to find the provider who could
deliver the requirements and would be
able to deliver all of the demands of the
group – we found Energise”

Energise were instructed to conduct a
GAP analysis of portfolio to identify
areas where energy and carbon
management could be improved. The
outcome of this was a series of
recommendations for improvement and
an action plan for the future. A
foundation of the delivery partnership.

Alongside a wider set of actions this

OUTCOME
Kier has set some clear goals about its
future in regards to carbon
management, with a target to reduce
the group’s carbon footprint by 10% as
part of the Vision 2020 targets. This will
