Rector Robert Skelton, (who lived at the Hall in the Square at Levisham) for David and Hannah Morley to
go on an assisted passage from Whitby to Quebec in 1831 with two of their children. They were to pay the
money back in installments.) I have found that the 380 ton ship “King William”, sailed from Whitby on
11th April 1831 and arrived in Quebec on 23 rd May 1831 and carried 300 passengers. I understand there
may be more details in a Canadian paper called 'Quebec Mercury' . The expenses for two families (the
other being J. Garnet, his wife and three children), and for David and Hannah Morley and 2 children for
provisions amounted to £28/8/8d plus £17 for their passage from Whitby to Quebec and £5 between them
for money when they landed in Quebec. They did repay at least some of this money starting with 12/- from
Morley and Garnet in the 1832/3 year. David appeared to have a garden as well as a house in Levisham

N.B. Sorry – but there is some confusion over the various illegitimate children of Ann Morley – some can
be placed with certainty – others cannot – I leave it up to the reader to see if they can sort them out. If you
do obtain the relevant birth and marriage certificates and can confirm who belongs to whom, please let me
know? There were also two Christopher Morley boys born around 1843/4 at Middleton which can cause
confusion.
Some time ago I read a library book on the History of Levisham by Betty Halse. This book mentioned a
‘Miss Morley’ playing the organ at chapel. It also mentioned that the villagers were so fed up of some of
the Morley’s being a drain on the Poor Charity that the Parish thought it would be cheaper in the long run
to send them off to America! This they did and they were Hannah and David Morley. There is a lane in
Levisham, known locally as Morley Lane!

Mulgrave Castle, just north of Whitby, was the seat of a Baron Mauley viz: Peter de Mauley, Baron Mauley
who married Elizabeth Maynard. – wonder if there is any distant connection?
