Principles 1.1 Dental healthcare professionals will meet and treat people who may be vulnerable to being drawn into terrorism. Being drawn into terrorism includes not just violent extremism but also non-violent extremism, which can create an atmosphere conducive to terrorism and can popularise views which terrorists exploit. 1.2 In line with guidance from the Counter Terrorism and Security Act 2015 certain health sector organisations are required to undertake mandatory duties. This is part of the governments overall counter terrorism strategy known as Prevent. NHS England has incorporated Prevent duty into its safeguarding arrangements, so that Prevent awareness and other relevant training is delivered to staff who provide services to NHS patients. 1.3 PDSE will now implement the following strategy to ensure that, where there are signs that someone has been or is being drawn into terrorism, staff have the appropriate guidance, including Channel training (part of the Prevent programme) to recognise those signs correctly, is aware of and can locate available support. 2. Strategy: 2.1 Safeguarding Co-ordinators will now assume responsibility of any direction and actions resulting from reports of any individual that is suspected of being drawn into terrorism. 2.2 Safeguarding Co-ordinators will receive formal briefing on the necessary process, support available and will complete Channel training. 2.3 The same process will be followed as would for any safeguarding concern raised. The following flow chart should be followed by all staff, supervisors and students if they believe there is any risk.
