INTRODUCTION:
The nursery was established in October 1994 as a self-financing,
non-profit making charity and was officially opened on 4 January
1995. The nursery has survived with commitment from parents,
the school and the local community. The nursery and school, work
very closely together although the nursery is an independent
charity. We are a member of the Preschool Learning Alliance and
registered with Ofsted; in July 2013 the nursery received a very
good Ofsted report, achieving good in every outcome. The nursery
is operated by an elected management committee, with two
members of staff who are responsible for the running of the
nursery.

NURSERY GRANTS:
Nursery grants are available to all children from the term after
they are 3 years of age.
We also have 2 year old funded places available.
NURSERY FEES:
For those not claiming grants the current fees are £3.00 per hour,
payable half termly or weekly if preferred. Charges are made for
all the sessions which you have stated that your child will attend,
even if your child is absent e.g. due to illness or holiday, if a long
term absence was to occur this would be reviewed on an individual
case basis.
NURSERY STAFF:
The nursery staff are responsible for the preparation and daily
routine of the nursery sessions and supervision of the children.
Nursery Manager: Anne Curr
Deputy Manager: Janet Harrison
KEYWORKERS:
Our keyworker scheme gives staff members particular
responsibility for just a few children. Each child in the group has
one keyworker, which can make settling into the group easier. The
key worker works with parents through shared record keeping to
ensure that all children are supported in reaching their full
potential.
THE COMMITTEE:
The nursery is run by elected committee, which ensures that major
decision-making is in the hands of the parents who use the group.
The committee are responsible for reviewing both policy and
practice, and for the employment and appraisal of members of
staff. Our Annual General Meeting, at which the committee for the
following year is elected, is held in October and parents will be
informed in good time so they are able to attend.
CURRICULUM:
We provide a secure, happy and safe environment where the
children are supported to develop their potential at their own
developmental level. We offer a wide range of “Play Activities” with
an appropriate of adult input, which leads to nationally approved
learning outcomes within the new Early Years Foundation Stage
framework.
 Early Years Foundation Stage
Children are encouraged to develop their potential through a variety of
play and craft activities. The Nursery curriculum is based on the
government’s Early Years Outcomes, which are as follows:
Prime Areas are:
 Personal, Social and Emotional Development
 Physical Development
 Communication & Language
and Specific areas are:
 Literacy
 Mathematics
 Understanding the World
 Expressive Arts & Design
and the themes of the EYFS, which are as follows:
 A Unique Child
 Positive Relationships
 Enabling Environments
 Learning and Development
We ensure that all these areas are implemented with thorough
planning of activities.
Prime areas
 Personal, Social & Emotional Development:
Within a nurturing environment we support children in developing
confidence, autonomy and self-respect. They will be encouraged to
work, concentrate and relate to others both independently and
within a group. We use activities, conversations, role-play, small
world play and practical examples to allow them to learn acceptable
ways of expressing their feelings and those of others.
 Physical Development
We have a wide range of both indoor and outdoor equipment to
allow children to develop confidence in both fine and gross motor
skills, they also learn about healthy diets, keeping healthy and safe
and encouraged to manage their own basic hygiene and personal
needs such as dressing and going to the toilet independently.
Under a high level of supervision the children are encouraged to
practice and learn new skills and develop old ones.
 Communication & Language
Working individually or in groups the children are encouraged to
extend their vocabulary and fluency by talking and listening. They
are encouraged to hear and respond to stories, rhymes and songs.
We use role-play and small world situations to communicate. The
children are encouraged to follow instructions and answer ‘how’ and
‘why’ questions about their experiences and in response to stories
or events.
Specific Areas
 Literacy
We encourage children to understand that written symbols carry
meanings and we support them to draw and write symbols as
appropriate to their developmental level. We encourage children to
look at and enjoy a variety of books both in the nursery and at
home.
 Mathematics
Through play and practical tasks the children become familiar with
numbers, counting, sorting, matching, sequencing and sharing. We
introduce appropriate maths language. We use songs, games, books
and props to help children become aware of numbers, shapes, sizes,
weight, time, money, patterns etc. At the appropriate
developmental level we introduce simple maths operations such as
simple addition and subtraction, one more or one less from a given
number, solve problems such as doubling, halving and sharing.
 Understanding the World
We offer a secure environment, which allows the children to
explore their own lives, cultures and those of others and the
natural world and environment. We use a range of safe and wellmaintained equipment to allow the children to develop their skills in
using technology in their everyday life such as the computer,
camera and CD player.
 Expressive Arts & Design
We use a wide range of resources including paint, glue, pens and
crayons to enable the children to express their ideas and feelings;
we also make use of natural resources when possible. Regular music
sessions allow the children to respond to sound and visual displays.
We provide resources to encourage role play based on first hand
experiences
 Parental and Carer Involvement
Parents are actively encouraged into the setting to share talents
and skills with the children. We regularly use parent readers at
story time to help involve parents and carers in the nursery.

POLICIES:
A file containing all the policies of Lyvennet Nursery is kept in the
nursery. All parents are asked to sign to show that they are aware
of the policies, and they are encouraged to read them. A copy of
any of the policies can be provided if necessary.
All of our policies are designed to offer the best possible
experience for the children and families in the group. Our policies
are reviewed annually or sooner if required and comments and
suggestions from parents are always welcome.
STARTING NURSERY:
 APPLICATION AND CONSENT FORMS:
An application form is included at the end of the prospectus; this
should be completed and returned to the nursery with a £5
registration fee. Once your application has been received the
parent or carer will be asked to complete consent forms relating to
issues such as photographs, trips, medical attention etc.
 THE FIRST DAYS:
A child who is tense or unhappy will not be able to play or learn
properly, so it is important for parents and nursery staff to work
together to help the child to feel confident and secure in the
group. This takes longer for some children than for others and
parents should not feel worried, if needed a phased stage of
settling in can be undertaken.
 WHAT TO WEAR:
There are no uniform requirements within the nursery. A nursery
logo sweatshirt, ordered via Nursery, is available from Border
Embroideries, but this is optional. It is best to send children
dressed in clothes, which are easily washed and not too new. It is
good for children to practice the skills, which make them
independent. Simple clothing, which they can handle themselves,
will enable them to feel more independent.
A pair of indoor shoes or slippers should be provided and also a
change of clothes in case of spillages, accidents etc. A named
water bottle is also suggested so your child has access to drinking
water during sessions. We also encourage regular outdoor play
whatever the weather and a waterproof coat and wellies are
recommended to be kept in nursery.
 NAPPIES AND TOILET TRAINING:
Please supply spare nappies, pull-ups, wipes, and nappy bags if these
items are used by your child. If your child is being toilet trained
please inform staff who will be happy to work with you.

ILLNESS:
There is an illness and exclusion policy which all parents and carers
need to be aware of. Please do not bring your child to nursery if
they show signs of ill health, or for 48 hours after symptoms of
sickness and diarrhoea. Staff must be told of any medical condition
concerning your child, this information will be kept confidential.
 CONCERNS AND COMPLAINTS:
If you have any queries or concerns, please do not hesitate to
contact the staff or a committee member at any time. Most
queries can be resolved informally, but if you feel you would like to
take any issues further there is a formal complaints procedure in
place and a copy of this is available in the nursery policy file.
WE HOPE THAT YOUR CHILD’S TIME IN LYVENNET
NURSERY WILL BE A VERY HAPPY AND PRODUCTIVE
ONE, WHICH WILL PREPARE THEM FOR SCHOOL.
