Questions over Problems 1 & 2
Causation
(Student Text pg. 506-507)
Causation is when one event causes a second
one.
- A correlation is a necessary condition for a
causation, but a correlation is not a sufficient
condition for causation.
- Finding a correlation is straightforward, using
statistics to establish causation is VERY difficult
Ex: Many medical studies have tried to prove that smoking
causes lung cancer.
• Is smoking a necessary condition for lung cancer? Why or why not?
• Is smoking a sufficient condition for lung cancer? Why or why not?
• Is there a correlation b/w people who smoke and people who get lung
cancer? Explain.
• Is it true that smoking causes lung cancer? If so, how was it proven?
What type of regression equation would best model the data
in the following graphs?
Linear, quadratic, or exponential?
