Panel 3 – Teenage Angst
This panel uses a stitch called ‘teardrop’ to represent the angst of the
teenage years. I’ve given specific instructions for using the stitch in this
shawl, preserving the seed pattern as a 4 stitch centre panel to represent
the inner child who stays with us through life…
I invite you to reflect on your time as a teen, teens you know or have known
and see if you can find some empathy/compassion for the teen in all of us.
This is the most difficult stitch in the piece, so be patient with it and yourself
– I had to be patient while figuring out how to set the pattern and include
the centre panel…it’s all math and patience. I’ve also included at the end of
this document a screen shot of the pattern from my source. The next couple
of paragraphs describe the design so you can just go to the Instruction
section if you want to skip the technical part.
The pattern is a multiple of 4 stitches plus 1 additional stitch. The shawl is
laid out for 64 stitches as
K1, pattern for 29 stitches, Seed stitch pattern 4 stitches, Pattern for 29
stitches, K1.
Instructions – starting on the right side of the shawl:
Abbreviations: K=Knit, P=Purl, SSK = slip stitch, slip stitch, knit into the
both slipped stitches as one, Sl = Slip stitch, Sl 1-k2tog-psso – Slip 1, knit
the next two together, pass slipped stitch over
