Petfood plant approval
• Always needs approval
– Heat treatment or even when only mixing
derived products

Exercise:
F0 calculation
Health and
Consumers
F0 value for cans
• Treatment in thermic centre of can equivalent to X min for at
121°C
Health and
Consumers
Z value?
Health and
Consumers
Some examples
Health and
Consumers
How to evaluate alternatives T & Δt
F0 = Δt x 10(T – 121/Z)
Where
• T = temperature used for sterilization
• Δt = time used for sterilization
• Z = 10°C (Clostridium botulinum)
Health and
Consumers
Try on your own
• The Z value for a micro-organism is 10oC.
• What is the F0 value of the ‘pressure sterilization’
method 133°C for 20 minutes?
• What does this mean in words?

Bans
• Cannibalism (art 11 1069)
• No catering waste (art 11 1069)
 Even not after processing
• Feedban (RE 999/2001)
• Even 21 days waiting period OF/SI is
kind of ban for reason feeding (art 11
1069)
Health and

Two systems to use feed, Both in
Annex X, section 4
• EU standards = harsh treatments = save to use
all over EU
Origin = 1069 cat 3 processing plant
• National standards = all other, lighter treatments
= some risk to use = restrict use geographically
Origin = 853/2004 milk processing plant
Health and
Consumers
Geographical restriction
Health and
Consumers
23
National standards
• 3 treatment groups
– Medium treatment => national and cross-borders
(mutual agreement)
– Light treatment =>national + limited number holdings
risk assessment FMD
– No treatment => national + limited number holdings
based on risk assessment FMD + restriction movement
animals
– Only direct use by farmers, not via compound feed
industry (cannot guarantee geographical restriction)
Health and
Consumers
Context
• Certain less treated milk products may only be
send to limited number of farms
• Based on best and worst case scenarios of
contingency plans for FMD
• Goal is kind of geographical restriction that is in
accordance with contingency plan. In case of
FMD outbreak due to use milk products
outbreak is limited.
Health and
Consumers
« Belgian » geographical
restriction
Health and
Consumers
« belgian » geographical
restriction
• During suspicion phase of FMD a buffer zone is
introduced. The supervision area has radius of
min. 10 km
• The individual holding may be max. 50km of
milk-processing establishment. The holdings
receiving milk products of same milkprocessing est. must fall in area with radius
10km.
• To limit the impact of a potential crisis the
number of holdings using “light” products is
limited to 10. Holdings using “no treatment”
are limited to 2.
