QUATTRO 4MTT (4 man team time-trial) – Mountain bike event Teams of 4 to race in handicap format. “Together Everyone Achieves More” The phrase “mountain biking is the new golf” has been thrown around recently, following the prolific growth of the sport both globally and in South Africa. Now there is an event that borrows from the golf competition format and incorporates aspects into the sport of mountain biking, bringing all ages and genders into a team format. This new concept is set to be the next evolution in the sport of mountain biking. Teams of four (as in a “fourball” in golf) must ride as a team around a set 20km route, but with a novel twist of a handicap based on age and gender. The overall winner is the team that has the fastest time after the handicap is taken into account. There is a minimum requirement that each team includes at least one female rider and having more than one lady will result in an added benefit to the team. Age is a factor as well, and riders over the age of 40 will be accredited with a bonus factor, while athletes over 60 will attract an even bigger bonus. The factorial applied is the difference between the current event winners and the category winners over 30 different races from 10km to 60km. In other words, if a female finishes within 110% of a male’s time the ladies benefit from a 10% time differential. The maximum benefit a team can achieve is 50% (or 0.5) so if the fastest time is 1 hour, then the team with a 0.5 factor will only have to ride 1:59.59 to win overall (by 1 second). Virginia Trails, now an established bike park in it’s own right, is the perfect venue for the event as the trails are manicured and built with the family rider in mind. Ever-enthusiastic farmer Pete Stainbank, who has invested hundreds of hours into building these trails, has built up his single-track and riding network over the years. All participants entering the Quattro 4MTT can look forward to a special and unique event which includes a free bike wash service provided by Muc-off, a global leading proponent of bike maintenance and care products. POC, a new brand in South Africa, will be on hand to show case some of their safety products including helmets, gloves and apparel. ICEdot will provide a free rider identification system to all paramedics and other service providers en-route, should the need arise in the case of an emergency. There will be food and beer on sale while the kids will be taken care of with a monitored and safe KidsZone. There is ample free parking and a great opportunity to bring a picnic basket along for a great family day out in the country. Entries for the event are now open; see www.roag.co.za for more event information and to enter online. There are only 180 team slots available as the teams go off on a pre-allocated start time.
