Learning

Wash your hands!!
Every time you hear the word
“PAVLOV”
you will dip your finger into your
lemonade powder
and LICK your finger clean
ENJOY!
Classical Conditioning
• Discovered how animals learn
• Dogs would associate the
food with the bell, thus
drooling before the food
was presented.

Classical Conditioning
• This is only applies to
automatic behaviors …
• Unconditional Stimulus
(US)- something that
triggers a natural,
reflexive response.
• Unconditional Response
(UR)- a natural
response to the US.
• A US PRODUCES A UR!
Classical Conditioning
• Next you find a neutral stimulus (something that
by itself causes no response).
• Present the NS just BEFORE the US many times
Classical Conditioning
• After a while, the body
begins to link together
the neutral stimulus (NS)
with the US
(unconditioned stimulus)
• Acquisition: you begin to
associate one stimulus
with the other
Classical Conditioning
• We know learning takes
places when the
previously neutral
stimulus now causes a
response
• At this point the
neutral stimulus is
called the conditioned
stimulus (CS) and the
unconditional response
becomes the
conditioned response
(CR).
Martin likes to take a shower in the men’s locker room after working
out. During one such shower, he hears someone flushing a nearby
toilet. Suddenly, boiling hot water rushes out of the showerhead,
causing Martin serious discomfort. As he continues the shower, he
hears another toilet flush and immediately jumps out from under the
showerhead.
What is the:
US:
CS: (was the NS)
UR:
CR:
US: boiling water
CS: toilet flushing (was the NS)
UR: jumping away from water
CR: jumping away from water
Please throw your cups away.
PAVLOV!
What happened?
Pavlov?
 Did your mouth get watery?
Lets review:
US:
CS:
UR:
CR:
US:
CS: Hearing Pavlov
UR:
Salivate
CR: Salivate
Why didn’t everyone’s mouth water?
What can be learned, can be unlearned
• ACQUISITION: We
know learning exists
because the NS is now
linked to the CR.
BUT…
• Acquisition does not
last forever.
Pavlov found if he sounded the bell (CS) with no
food, after a while, the salivating (CR) decreased
and eventually caused
EXTINCTION!
The CS (bell) no longer signals the US (food)
Spontaneous Recovery
• Sometimes, after
extinction, the CR
still randomly
appears after the
CS
• weaker response
Generalization and Discrimination
Generalization
• Something is so similar
to the CS that you get a
CR.
Discrimination
• Something so different
to the CS so you do not
get a CR.
Learned taste aversion
(Garcia Effect)
–Getting sick from food/drink just ONE
time, you will avoid that food forever
–Response is adaptive; avoid dangerous
things in the future (helpful for
survival)
