Raiders forge through ups and downs

The Meyersdale Red
Raider boys’ basketball team
tipped off their season on Tuesday, December 13th. They traveled to Windber to take on the
Ramblers. Unfortunately, the
Raiders lost by the final score of
54-36.
Following their tough loss
to Windber, Meyersdale faced
Turkeyfoot at home on Thursday,
December 6th. Turkeyfoot won
the game by the score of 69-67.
On Friday, December
16th, Meyersdale played against
Hyndman Charter School at
Hyndman. The Red Raiders won
the game 59-44.
The following game
was on Tuesday, December 20th,
against Everett at home. The
Raiders came out empty handed
when Everett won 80-45.
On December 21st, the
Red Raiders hosted Salisbury.
Meyersdale played hard and
defeated the Elks due to a wellplayed game with a score of 51-41.
After the Red Raider’s win against
Salisbury, they faced North Star
at home on Tuesday, January 3rd.
Despite their fierce opponents in
North Star, Meyersdale picked
up yet another win when they
came out on top 64-58.
On Thursday, January 5th, Meyersdale went on
the road to tip off against Berlin
Brothersvalley. Unfortunately,
the Raiders came up short when
they were defeated 67-40. Having quickly forgotten their defeat
against Berlin, the Raiders took
on Hyndman and did not disappoint. Meyersdale won the thrilling game 66-59.
On Monday, January 9,
the Raiders traveled to Rockwood
to take on the Rockets. Despite a
close game and an impressive effort, the Raiders fell short 54-52.
After the close loss, on Thursday,
January 12th, Meyersdale faced
Shanksville Stonycreek. The Vikings jumped out to an early lead
and did not let up when they defeated the Raiders 76-29.
The Raiders faced a
tough challenge on Friday, January 13th, when they faced the
Portage Mustangs at home. Meyersdale successfully came out on
top in exciting fashion when they
won 59-47. Meyersdale thentook on the Conemaugh Township Indians. Unfortunately for
the Raiders, the Indians played
a tough game and they won by a
score of 80-53.
The Raiders continued their streak of away games
when they traveled to Shade and
later to Turkeyfoot. Despite well
played games for the team, they
were defeated by scores of 81-47
and 81-54. The Raiders then traveled to Conemaugh Township for
a rematch against the team that
had defeated them earlier in the
season. The Indians took care of
business against the Raiders and
beat them once again, 84-48.

On Friday, January 27th,
Meyersdale picked up win number six when they defeated Salisbury on the road. Meyersdale won
the game with a score of 66-48.
On Tuesday, January
31st, the Red Raiders faced their
rivals at a home game against Berlin once again. Berlin capitalized
on the Raiders mistakes and un-
fortunately dominated the Raiders, 79-52.
On Thursday, February
3rd, Meyersdale faced Rockwood
at a home game. Meyersdale lost
by 4 points 60-56.
On Wednesday, February 8th, the Red Raiders faced
Shade at a home game. Meyersdale lost the game 50-77. The
final game for the Red Raiders
boys varsity basketball team was
at Ferndale on Friday, February
10th. Meyersdale lost the game
77-25. Throughout the season the
Red Raiders had won 6 games
and loss 16. Riley Christner was
the leading scorer throughout the
season, with a total of 282 points.
The team’s total points were 719.
Rifle Team takes steady aim at States

The Meyersdale Area
High School rifle team lost its latest match on Friday, February 3
to the Conemaugh Township Indians at the Indians home range.
Top shooters for MAHS were
Tori Christner, Tiffani Christner,
Chloe Rough, Lindsey Robertson,
and Samantha Schrock.
Everett defeated the
team at their most recent match.
In the opening week of the season, the team lost to Chestnut
Ridge and to their rival Berlin.
The Raiders completed the starting point of the season with a victory over Northern Cambria.
Their match with Northern Cambria sparked a long winning streak when they won their
next five matches. During their
streak, they defeated Northern
Cambria, North Star, Somerset,
Salisbury, Rockwood, and Bishop Carroll. Along the way, many
different shooters like senior Tori
Christner, junior Chloe Rough,
sophomore Tiffani Christner, and
freshmen Lindsay Robertson and
Sami Schrock shot at a consistently high level.
Ms Rough spoke about
past victories and about her
hopes for the remaining portion
of the season. She said, “I am so
proud of how far our team has
come this year! The freshmen
that joined the team this year are
working really hard. Our varsity
line is really strong this year, and
if we have a good match, we are
looking to beat the school record.
I have high hopes for the rest of
the season!”
State competition qualifying will take place the weekend
of February 24th. Meyersdale
will host PIAA regional competition for the first time.
