MBA High Performance Overview
The Manitoba Badminton Association High Performance (HP) Program is designed to provide our
athletes with opportunities to receive the training, support and experiences they need to excel in
National Competitions.
The intent of this program is to support our nationally competitive athletes to continue their
competitive aspirations and represent Manitoba in Inter-Provincial competitions as well as help the
rest of the team in their development.
Athletes in the HP programs are expected to be a positive role model within the Badminton
Community and represent the Manitoba Badminton Association (MBA) to the best of their abilities
at events throughout Canada.
It is an extension of a player’s club program. Players involved in the program are expected to also
play and train in their club environment.
HPA1/CWG Team
This is the top tier HP group comprised of the very best badminton players in the province
including open level senior players, members of the 2015 Canada Games Team and exceptionally
talented players eligible for the 2019 CWG. HP A1 is considered the entry point into the ‘Train to
Compete’ stage of the Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) developed by Badminton
Canada and endorsed by the Provincial Sport Organizations. Players in HPA1 and/or members of
the 2015 CWG can access Manitoba Badminton Association travel credits based on results (please
see FUNDING LEVELS below for details).
Note:
*An athlete in HPA1 can be reassigned/moved down to HPA2 if the athlete’s level of performance
decreases significantly to the point of having a detrimental effect on the overall level of the HPA1
program.
HPA2
The HPA2 is a ‘feeder’ group for the HPA1 comprised of younger developing juniors who are the
very best junior badminton players in the junior age categories (U16/U19) that have the potential
to represent Manitoba at the 2019 CWG.
If there are spots still remaining in HPA2, players at the very top of the U16 and/or U19 age
categories, provincially/nationally, that show signs of great potential, determination and work
ethic, may be invited into HPA2. Players in HPA2 may have access to Manitoba Badminton
Association travel credits, if their results allow.

An athlete from HPA2 can be invited to try, or officially be part of HPA1 (providing there is room) at
any point in the season only if the athlete is invited officially for the following year by maintaining
or increasing their level of performance and continuing to demonstrate all the attributes of a HPA1
player.
IDENTIFICATION & SELECTION FOR HP
CANADA WINTER GAMES (2015 & 2019)
The 2015 and 2019 CWGs respectively, are the marquee events by which most athletes for the HP
programs (HPA1 & HPA2) will be selected.
There are twenty (20) spots available in each of the HP programs. Twenty available spots in the
HPA1 program will be awarded to the 2015 CWG Training Team (CWGTT). However, a player who
does not qualify for the 2015 CWG but plans to try out for the 2019 CWG can be invited to the HPA1
program based on exceptional talent and attitude. In addition, a few spots in HPA1 will be made
available for senior players returning to HPA1 but who are not eligible for either the CWG in 2015
or 2019. These senior players must be fully committed to national competitions including National
Championships, within the year they are invited to the HP program.
Some players who do not qualify for the 2015 CWGTT in August but who fit the criteria of the HP
program in general will be invited to the HPA2 program by way of official invitation. In order to
be accepted into HPA2, a player MUST have CWG in 2019 as one of their main goals.
If you were successful at the CWG Training Team (CWGTT) tryouts in August 2013 for the games in
2015, you will automatically be granted entry into the HPA1 Program. After the final tryouts in
August the Provincial Coach has the ability to move an athlete from HPA1 to HPA2 or vice versa.
You are receiving invitation in advance of the results of the August try outs because the CWG
Committee feels that based on your tournament results/attitude/work ethic/potential, you are a
good candidate for the HP program and have the potential to represent Manitoba at the CWG in
2015 and or 2019. It is a way for us, the HP Committee, to let you know in advance so that you can
plan your short and long term future with badminton as a serious pursuit.
WHY IS CWG IMPORTANT?
How Manitoba performs at the next CWG in 2015 in Prince George, BC and again in 2019, will help
in the design and implementation of the training and preparation of our top athletes over the next 8
years. It is one of the most important events in Canada in that many athletes who have used CWG as
a premiere event in their athletics careers have also gone on to represent Canada at the Olympics
and some of the most prestigious badminton events in the world.
CWG is the ideal event around which the HP program revolves. It will help determine who our most
ambitious athletes are and which ones will commit to development over an extended period of time
which is one of the goals for the HP program.
Manitoba’s success at the CWG is an example of the overall success of badminton in Manitoba
including grassroots programs, development teams, high performance programs, coaching and the
club system. CWG reflect the depth of talent, teamwork, spirit and work ethic. The CWG’s is the

only multi-sport national championships directly subsidized by the Government of Canada on an
ongoing basis and as Sport Manitoba is the governing body for amateur sport, CWG is the highest
level of competition at which we can succeed. From Sport Manitoba’s perspective, MBA’s overall
evaluation is partially determined by the individual and team success at the CWG. Past and present
results at the CWG could have an effect on the level of support from Sport Manitoba towards our
Provincial Team operations.
Because the sport of Badminton at CWG includes an individual component, it is among the best
events for an individual player (and their coach) to use performance from one game to the next as a
marker in their quadrennial (every four years) training plan. This time span between two CWGs
makes it a perfect event for our top players in the province to make the long term adjustments to
their overall plan to prepare for the world of international competition.
By accepting this HP Player Package (official invitation), you agree that you have your sights set
on the CWG in 2019 (assuming you are eligible).
Note:
*Players who do not receive this invitation have an equal chance of making the HPA1 roster since
entry into the HPA1 this year is based on results at the August tryouts for the CWGTT.
*All athletes in the HP programs are subject to the ‘Athlete Agreement’, ‘Code of Conduct’ &
‘Expectations of the Athletes’ (see p.13 ‘Disciplinary Actions’).
ENTRY INTO HP THROUGH APPLICATION
Although the HPA1 roster will more than likely be full, applications will still be accepted for both
HP programs and will be reviewed by the HP Committee. Some application will be put on a waiting
list in order of most eligible and will be accepted if room in the program becomes available.
All applications must be made in writing by the applicant stating why the athlete feels he/she
deserves to be in the HP program. The letter should be accompanied by:
 List of most recent results (2013/14)
 List of short term and long term badminton goals
 A letter of support from the player’s club coach (if he/she has one)
All applications must be submitted to [email protected] or mailed/delivered to 323-145 Pacific
Ave. Winnipeg MB. R2V1J8. Once submitted to the Manitoba Badminton Associations, the
applications will be forwarded the HP Committee who will review the application and come to a
verdict. The player will be notified shortly thereafter.
OBJECTIVE
The goal of the Manitoba Badminton Association High Performance Program is to continually
improve the quality of the participants’ competitive experience and improve the results of our
athletes and teams at the National Championships, Canada Winter Games (CWG), Western Canada
Summer Games (WCSG) and International Competition.

HPA1 /CWGTT players who live more than 100± km from Winnipeg pay a reduced rate
due to both the inability to attend all practices/sessions as well as the personal costs
associated with distance from training venues and team center. These players have the
same access to practices, camps etc. as HPA1 players who live within 100km of Winnipeg.
The onus is on these players to stay in contact with the Provincial Coach with regards to
their training and development
LIVE IN MANITOBA
These players are not expected to make all practices, camps etc. but must show that a
strength and conditioning plan is being followed and every attempt is being made to
practice on court where and when the athlete is able. The player is encouraged to make as
many Monday night on court practices as possible.
LIVE IN ANOTHER PROVINCE
This player must make all attempts to practice on court and maintain S&C program. The
player’s club coach and contact information must be given to the MBA so that the Provincial
Coach may contact them to help them monitor the players’ progress.
If a S&C trainer is not available or the player desires, he/she has full access to our Sport 4

Athlete Agreement and Code of Conduct
2014/15
The Manitoba Badminton Association wants to help consistently produce nationally
competitive athletes. That is our goal and as a result we spend a significant amount of our
annual budget trying to help Manitoba’s best athletes reach their potential. We do this to
ensure that we have a strong group of athletes to send to Inter-Provincial competitions and
represent Manitoba to the best of our abilities.
To ensure that we can continue to help our top athletes pursue their competitive goals in
the future it is important that we make it as clear as possible what is expected of our
athletes and illustrate how our funding will be distributed; so that it is fair to all parties.
A Code of Conduct is important because it attempts to remove grey areas and illustrate
what is expected of both parties that are involved in a mutually beneficial partnership.
Furthermore it is important that we distinguish when the Code of Conduct is in place. All
Manitoba athletes are expected to abide by the Athlete Code of Conduct.
The Code of Conduct is in place when you are on the property of a Badminton Club
anywhere in Canada. Remember you are our representative within the community and as
a result your actions within the Badminton community directly reflect upon the Manitoba
Badminton Association. Your conduct outside of the Badminton community will also be
