Kay Colbert, LCSW [email protected] Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) Group for Depression www.kaycolbert.com Have you had repeated episodes of depression? Would you like to learn tools to help you manage moods better, release yourself from old habits and find a way so you don’t have to battle with yourself all the time? Kay Colbert, LCSW, is pleased to offer an MBCT for Depression group that will start in late April or early May 2013. The group is limited to 12 participants and will meet for 2 hours, once a week, for 8 weeks. (Day and time to be determined by group members.) The group will follow the curriculum developed for MBCT groups. Cost is $400 for the entire 8 week group, which includes all handouts and materials, as well as a copy of the book, A Mindful Way Through Depression. Please call or email to set up an initial screening interview (at no charge). What is MBCT? Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is designed to help people who suffer repeated bouts of depression and chronic unhappiness. It has been shown to prevent relapse in recurrent depression. It combines the ideas of cognitive therapy with the principals of mindfulness. The heart of this work lies in becoming acquainted with the modes of mind that often characterize mood disorders while at the same time learning to develop a new relationship to them. MBCT was developed by Zindel Segal, Mark Williams and John Teasdale, based on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. Between classes, there is home practice, using guided meditations and other exercises. In each class, you will have an opportunity to talk about your experiences with the home practices, any obstacles that may arise, and how to deal with them skillfully. Each class is organized around a theme that is explored through both group discussion and mindfulness practice. Clinical research has demonstrated MBCT to be as effective as medication in reducing relapse of depression. It is not intended to replace medication or individual counseling, but is a beneficial adjunct or maintenance therapy. Who would benefit? These groups are not intended to be a first treatment for depression, nor as treatment for someone in an active depressive episode. This group is recommended for individuals in remission from several prior episodes of depression, or individuals currently in therapy who might benefit from additional support and strengthening of skills to improve resilience to depression relapse. About the therapist: Kay Colbert is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in private practice in Dallas.
