Christians for Israel International
Strengthening the "Movement“
Part 1
Leadership development
Mission and Vision statement
Mission
Our mission is to bring biblical understanding in the church
and among the nations concerning God's purposes for
Israel and to promote comfort of Israel through prayer
and action.
Vision
Our vision is to establish a global network having effective
national impact, for the blessing of the nation of Israel,
the Jewish people, the church and the nations.
Two Keys:
The message and the movement
• Message
– Willem Glashouwer
– Other preachers, teachers, authors, communicators
– Communication tools (books, newspapers, internet,
etc.)
• Movement
– Part 1 – (core) leadership (today)
– Part 2 – team and ministry development (tomorrow)
The Movement –
introduction I
• Biblical foundation: The teaching on the "body
of Christ“: Christ the head – we His members
• Foundational Biblical teaching
• 1 Corinthians 12
• Romans 12
• Ephesians 4
The Movement –
Introduction II
• Christ = the head
• The body = the members
• Key question: How can very different
members (= believers) function in harmony
and in fruitfulness?
The Movement –
introduction III
• Foundation: The headship of Christ!
– 1. Cor. 12: 12-13
– Rom. 12:1-2
– Eph. 4: 4-7; 15b-16
• Questions:
– Have we fully committed our lives into His hands?
– Do we desire for Him to be our "head“, to be our LORD?
– Do we trust Him that he knows best, what is good and
right for our lives, in order to honor Him and to be fruitful?
• Conclusion: Renew your comittment and your ongoing
relationship to the Lord – the head of the body
The Movement –
introduction IV
• Recognition: The extreme variety of the
members (= believers)
– Danger A: To think too low of oneself (1 Cor 12,1420)
– Danger B: To be too proud of oneself (1 Cor 12,
21; Rom 12, 3-5)
• Conclusion: Find peace in who you are "in the
Lord!“
The Movement –
introduction part V
• Application to "Christians for Israel International“
– Many nations, many languages, many (church)
backgrounds, many different personalities
– Question: What unites us?
• Love and comittment to Jesus and His church
• Love and a sense of calling towards (the church and) Israel
• Common understanding and inner agreement of vision and
mission of C4I
• Being willing to find the right "place in the body“ – and be
willing to adapt in the future according to new
developments
C4II – leadership structure
• The international structure
– The President , the International board and Executive
Director together form global leadership team
– 5 world regions
•
•
•
•
Europe
Americas
Africa
Asia-Pacific
– Goal: Development of leadership teams in all these
regions.
– National leadership
– Task-oriented leadership (e.g. Engl. newspaper / internet)
Any questions so far???
• Feedback
• Questions and answers
Three areas of leadership
(simplified version)
•"Fivefold ministry“
– Eph. 4:11-12
– National / international dimension (see 2. Cor. 10:12-13)
•Other distinct leadership gifts and callings
– e.g.: elders, deacons, …
– Local / regional leadership
– Support of national / international leadership teams
•Every believer is called to "lead“ (= influence, make a
difference)
– Be "salt and light“ (Matt. 5:13-16) in his/her immediate
surrounding
– Support of local / regional leadership team
National leadership (team) 1
• Different leadership personalities according to Eph. 4:11
– Apostle: Pioneer, strategic leader, visionary, all-rounder ("has a
bit of everything“), team-leader, above-avarage "faith“
– Prophet: Interprets past, anticipates future; often "black and
white“; "prophetic loneliness“; is concerned about the "Kairos =
now-word“; intercessory mindset
– Teacher: Concerned about "the whole truth“ (logos); sometimes
also "black and white“; often "corrective“ to the prophet (and
vice-versa)
– Pastor: Relational oriented; harmony oriented; high emphasis
on care and protection
– Evangelist: Reaching out to the unreached (may be applied to
"Israel“ as well).
National leadership (team) 2
• Question:
– What is (or could be) your "area of influence“?
– If "national“: What kind of leadereship personality
would you ascribe to yourself?
• David Pawson: Mostly combination of one adjective
and one nome, e.g.: prophetic teacher, apostolic
evangelist, pastoral teacher, etc.
National leadership (team) 3
• Application in the C4I context:
• Any national branch or ministry would benefit to have
an "apostolic component“ in its national leadership
team (either from within or from outside!) (e.g.: CH)
• On the basis of the "apostolic component“ other
qualified leadership skills are desirable to be integrated.
(Without such a kind of "pioneering team-leader“ it
may be better to stay "slim“).
• Without this component accept the limitations and
make the best out of it within the framework of the
giftings which are represented in the (leadership) team.
(More: Part 2)
National leadership (team) final remarks
• Please consider: Leadership development is an open, sometimes
painful, process:
– You yourself are in an ongoing process / allways changing
– All the people around you are the same
– Our movement as a whole is constantly developing / changing
• But the promises of scipture to those who are willing to involve
themselfes in these kind of responsibilities (according to their
calling) are great: Growing maturity, growing fruitfulnes, deepening
in the relationship to the Lord, special rewards in the life to come:
Matt. 25: 14-23;
• So please - dear (national) leader in the body of Christ:
– Be prepared to (re-)discover or confirm and take your place in the
body of Christ
– remain humble +flexible and at the same time hopeful +strong in spirit
– Trust the Lord that He is your friend, your protector and your rewarder
Summary and conclusion
– C4II: On the basis of our calling, as expressed in missionand vision statement we see ourselves as a (global)
movement with a message for the whole church.
– As far as the movement-side is concerned, the biblical
picture of the "body of Christ“ is our scriptural guideline.
– The application of these truths into everyday life is an
open, sometimes painful, process.
– But commitment to this process holds a lot of biblical
promises.
– Today, we only talked about (national) leadership;
tomorrow (Part 2) we will continue with a (broader) teamperspective.
– Close with Ephesians 4:11-17

Strengthening the "Movement“
Part 2
Team and Ministry development
Summary and conclusion -Part 1
= Starting point for Part 2
– C4II: On the basis of our calling, as expressed in missionand vision statement we see ourselves as a (global)
movement with a message for the whole church.
– As far as the movement-side is concerned, the biblical
picture of the "body of Christ“ is our sciptural guidline.
– The application of these truths into everyday life is an
open, sometimes painful, process.
– But commitment to this process holds a lot of biblical
promises.
– Today, we only talked about (national) leadership;
tomorrow (Part 2) we will continue with a (broader) teamand ministry-perspective.
C4II – national vision: Developing the
Message and the Movement
• Message:
– Ministry: Preaching, teaching, conferences, seminars, etc.
– Tools: Books, Newspaper, Internet, DVD-courses, other
media
• Movement:
– Core team development
– Grassroot network (prayer groops, activists, volunteers)
– Strategic projects and events (e.g.: commemoration, birth
of state of Israel, etc.) and special activities (signatures,
promotion, fundraising, etc.)
– Sometimes on your own; sometimes with others
Steps for (team) development:
1) – "catch the vision and run with it“
• Every spiritual movement needs a spiritual vision
and a vision carrier with a sense of calling from
God! As for C4II:
• The personal spiritual vision must fit within the context of
the C4II-vision
• The vision carrier should build a trusting relationship to the
C4II-leadership
• The vision carrier should be aware that he cannot do it alone
but needs a team and look out for it
• Sometimes it is enough to know that he/she is supposed to
"kick it off“ (start the process)
• Question: Am I a / the visionary?
Steps of (team) development:
2) Dare to start small
• Mat. 25:14ff "Parable of the talents“: "Take
and appreciate, what you have“ – and make
the most out of it.
• Consider your "starting / active capital“
• Dare to start small – if you have the sense that
the Lord called you and the timing is right.
• Meditation / Question: "What is my starting
capital“?
Steps of (team) development:
3) Think in phases of development 1
• Jesus‘ ministry developed in different phases:
a)
b)
c)
Starting by himself
12 Disciples
Later: 70 / Later: 120 / Later: 3.000 / …
• Different phases:
–
–
–
–
–
–
–
Embryonic phase
Pioneering phase
Growth
Stagnation / Consolidation
Growth / Stagnation
Decrease? (Pruning?)
End of life cycle
• Sometimes different phases need different kind of people
Steps of (team) development:
3) Think in phases of development 2
• Prayer, meditation, consultation, discussion:
– How would I describe the present phase?
– What would I expect / hope for the next phase?
– What is needed for the next phase? How can I
prepare?
Steps of (team) development:
4) Think in resources
• Jesus was very practical / down-to-earth – as are most
Jews: Lk. 14,28
• Resources:
–
–
–
–
Address list
Team members / Talents and contributions they may have
Prayer (support) and spiritual ressources
Helpful relationships outside of the core team
• In your surrounding / nation
• Consider the options of C4II
– Financial resources
• Question: Which kind of resource(s) is/are presently
needed most?
Steps of (team) develoment:
5) Think in people 1
• Diffent kind of people are needed:
1.
2.
CORE LEADERSHIP: Visionary, strategic, pioneering, spiritual
core leadership (see part 1)
SUPPORT TEAM: Team members who are willing to take
responsibility in a segment of the work, e.g.:
»
»
»
»
»
»
»
»
3.
administration / coordination
prayer,
fundraising,
teaching,
public relations and communication,
developing or adapting media tools,
organisation of special projects, events, speaking engagements,
etc.
HELPERS: Further practical support / volunteers / intercessors
/ regional contacts , etc. e.g. putting out the newspaper in the
churches
Steps of (team) develoment:
5) Think in people 2
• Questions:
a) Which people are active and we can be thankful for?
b) What kind of team members or "human support“ is
presently needed most?
Steps of (team) development
7 final remarks
1.
2.
Consider your calling / Consider your vision
Consider your "place in the body“ (team)
– Not thinking too high of yourself
– Not thinking too low of yourself
3.
4.
5.
Don‘t try to change (manipulate) others
Be careful that others don‘t change (manipulate)you. If need be:
Look for a place in the body which fits you better.
(Ocassional) conflicts are normal – let them serve you (Rom 8:28)
– If need be with help from outside
6.
Keep a positive attitude of gratefulness, faith and apprieciation.
– To the Lord and to your neighbor (team member)
– And to the "gifts and callings“ which He has entrusted to you
7.
Keep trusting Jesus - King of the Jews and head of His body
Ephesians 4 : 11-16
Christ himself gave the Apostles, the prophets, the
evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip His people for
works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up
until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of
the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole
measure of the fullness of Christ.
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by
the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of
teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their
deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will
grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who
is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined
and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and
builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.
