Founded in 1882, The Actors Fund
provides for the welfare of all
entertainment professionals.
The Fund serves those who work
in film, theatre, television, music, opera, and dance, and assists both
performers and those behind the scenes with a broad spectrum of
programs designed to address the needs of the community, including
comprehensive social services and emergency assistance, health
services and insurance information, supportive and affordable housing,
employment and training services, and skilled nursing and assisted
living care. The Actors Fund is a safety net, providing programs and

Dear
Friends and Supporters,
2007 was a year of accomplishment and progress for The
Actors Fund and we’re very pleased to share our Annual
Report with you. As we celebrated our 125th Anniversary during this milestone year, The Actors Fund helped
9,315 entertainment and performing arts professionals an increase of 11% over 2006 - representing almost every
state in the country, and support, revenue and other income reached $23 million, exceeding expenses of
$22.6 million. Our colleagues in performing arts and entertainment found a responsive and caring place to
turn when they came to The Actors Fund, and we thank you for helping make this possible.
The Fund’s careful stewardship of our mission and our programs meant that 84 cents of every dollar went
to helping those in need, and for this care we were awarded the highest possible rating - Four Stars - by
Charity Navigator, the country’s largest and most utilized evaluator of charities and their performance. Of
the 9,315 we assisted this year with close to two dozen programs 4,301 received Social Services and Financial Assistance, 4,371 used our Health Services (including the Health Insurance Resource Center), 2,404
participated in The Fund’s Employment & Training programs, 252 were active in our young performers
program, called Looking Ahead, and 315 lived in our residences.
The Actors Fund is proud of our record of quickly responding to crises and situations as they occur throughout the entertainment community, and 2007 was no exception. We helped our colleagues who continued to
be affected by Hurricane Katrina, provided assistance to those in New York dealing with the work stoppage
due to the Local 1 strike, and offered significant support to those suffering the tremendous impact of the
Writers Guild strike.
Tremendous progress was made in 2007 on major projects, including the expansion and renovation of the
Lillian Booth Actors’ Home in Englewood, New Jersey and the development of Schermerhorn House in
Brooklyn, New York. In addition to a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center in Englewood, 15 additional
beds will be available - and 10 were occupied by mid-year. And we launched a new program, The Dancers’
Resource, through the guidance of Fund Vice President Bebe Neuwirth. The Dancers’ Resource addresses
the unique needs of injured dancers and is helping the dance community understand that all of the services
of The Actors Fund are available to them.
As always, so much is made possible by the championship support of our great friends and colleagues at
Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, which provided $4,450,000 in 2007 for a total of $45 million since
1987. The support of BC/EFA for ongoing programs including the AIDS Initiative, Phyllis Newman Women’s Health Initiative, Actors Work Program and Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic, as well as their seed
funding for the new program The Dancers’ Resource, is a model of partnership and commitment, and we
salute them along with all of our donors.
We are honored to lead The Fund and to work with a committed and dedicated Board of Trustees. Our staff
is simply sensational – professional and compassionate, every day and hour of the week – and is privileged to
serve the thousands who seek our assistance each year.
Thank you for your support and your partnership in our essential work.
Sincerely,
Brian Stokes Mitchell

of supporters, including thousands
of individual donors as well as foundations,
corporations, government agencies and the

In Memoriam.
These pages include biographies of two trustees we honor – Lillian Booth and Frances Gaar
L
illian Booth was born in Baltimore
to Greek parents. In her early 20s she
moved to New York when Milton Berle
invited her to perform, ultimately appearing in
small roles on Broadway including The Right
Age to Marry, Caught and The Family Failing.
Lillian
Booth
Lillian was successful in New York’s high society
and made a strong marriage with Col. Ferris Booth,
who grew the fortune he inherited from his father’s
investments in such companies as Hotpoint and
International Business Machines Corp. Booth
began her philanthropic efforts after her husband’s
death in 1956 while expanding the family’s wealth
with savvy investments in real estate. Her first
major gift was $2 million to Columbia University
in the 1960’s, building a student activity center
named Ferris Booth Hall in honor of her husband.
Booth donated $3.5 million in the 1990’s for
a dialysis center and an oncology/radiation
facility at Pascack Valley Hospital. Mrs. Booth
also donated several patient transport vans to
Christ Hospital in Jersey City that were used
on September 11 to shuttle victims from the
World Trade Center and gave the hospital
an additional van just before her death.
1915 - 2007
The Actors Fund received $2 million from Lillian
in 2004, renaming The Actors Fund Home in
Englewood as the Lillian Booth Actors’ Home.
She also joined the Board of Trustees of The
Fund in 2003 and served until her death.
Although Booth never had children of her
own she was tremendously generous to her 10
nieces and nephews and their own children.
Misha Dabich, her companion of 50 years, said,
“An angel on earth — that’s what she was. She
did more for others than for herself. Every man
should have a gal like her. She took care of the
community. She took care of her family.”

Lillian Booth
A terrific way to recognize those who make a difference – and those to be
remembered – are through In Honor Of and In Memory Of gifts. The Fund
celebrates both the individuals named and those who choose to recognize them
through a special gift to The Actors Fund.

F
rances Jessie Gaar was born in Hagerstown,
Maryland. Her love of swimming in the waters
of Chesapeake Bay started early and by the age
of 9 she had won her first swimming title. While in high
school she decided to become an actress and attended
The University of Michigan, majoring in speech. She was
also the captain of the women’s swim team.
Because she didn’t want to be typecast, Fran turned
down an offer from MGM to come to Hollywood and
work as a stand-in for the swimmer Esther Williams.
Instead, she continued to study acting with Stella Adler
and Lee Strasberg and made her Broadway debut as a
much-married showgirl in Ladies Night In A Turkish
Bath. Also working in television and summer stock, her
credits during the era of live television included “Kraft
Theatre”, “Playhouse 90”, “U.S. Steel Hour”, the Ed
Sullivan and Jackie Gleason shows and many others.
Frances
Gaar
1918 - 2008
Fran was the captain of the ballet for the original
production of Arabian Nights with Lauritz Melchior
at Jones Beach and served as stunt coach and
choreographer for the Esther Williams television
spectacular. She staged the first underwater ballet
performed with scuba gear for the Sea Hunt
Extravaganza at the 1964 World’s Fair, inspired by
the TV series and narrated by Lloyd Bridges. Fran
was certified as the first woman master scuba diving
instructor in the world and in 2001 was inducted into
the Women Divers Hall of Fame.
Fran had a tireless commitment to the entertainment
community. She was elected Executive Secretary/
Treasurer of AGVA in the early 1980’s and served as
a Trustee of the AGVA Welfare Trust and the Margie
Coates Sick and Relief Fund. She worked tirelessly on
behalf of AGVA members to the end of her life.
Fran was a Life Member and an In The Spotlight
member of The Actors Fund and became a Trustee in
1995. Her generosity and passionate devotion to The
Fund’s Lillian Booth Actors’ Home was legendary.
Among her many projects there were the monthly variety
shows produced for the residents. “Fran’s Gaarden of
Aquatic Delights” beautifies the Home entrance. On
June 25, 2008 The Actors Fund Board of Trustees passed
a resolution to name the Home’s Boardwalk of Fame
“Fran’s Variety Boardwalk” and the path connecting six
new gardens in front of the Home “Fran’s Gaarden Path”
as lasting tributes to her memory.

The Actors Fund established the Edwin Forrest Society to give
special recognition to those selfless individuals who have made
provisions for estate gifts to The Actors Fund. The gift can be made
through a will, a trust, an insurance policy or retirement plan and
membership is granted to those who pledge that they have set aside
an estate gift so thousands of performing arts and entertainment
professionals can rely upon The Actors Fund in the years to come.
