KINGSTON >> Just as students returned to the
classroom for the 201617 school year on Tuesday, a
city official said the state Department of Transportation
has given Kingston the goahead for the “Safe Routes to
Schools” initiative.
The project aims to make walking to school safer for
children in Kingston.
City Engineer Ralph Swenson said the next step will be creating the documentation to
formally award the project to SunUp Enterprises Inc. of Wappingers Falls, which
submitted the low bid of $465,033.
The bid was about $50,000 more than what the federal government awarded Kingston for
the work, but Swenson said the city probably will apply some of its funding from the state
Consolidated Highway Improvement Program (CHIPs) to offset the difference. He said
the city also will look for ways to cut some of the projected costs.
The project, which could begin as soon as midOctober, is to include the installation of
new sidewalks, crosswalks and pedestrian signals near four elementary and middle
schools in the city.
According to the project narrative:
• A new sidewalk will be installed on Burhans Boulevard, near Harry L. Edson
Elementary and J. Watson Bailey Middle schools. Also, improvements will be made to a
Lucas Avenue pedestrian signal and crosswalk in the same area.

• Pedestrian signals will be installed at Washington Avenue’s intersections with Lucas
Avenue, Main Street, Pearl Street and Linderman Avenue. The area is home to children
who attend George Washington Elementary School, as well as Edson and Bailey.
• A “trafficcalming” hump will be installed on Joy’s Lane, which is in the EdsonBailey
area, and curb cuts will be installed at all four corners at Murray Street and Delaware
Avenue, as well as on Gross Street. The latter project is for children who attend John F.
Kennedy Elementary School. Also, a pedestrian signal at the intersection of Murray
Delaware intersection will be improved.
• The intersection of Quarry Street and Hurley Avenue, near J. Watson Bailey, will get a
new crosswalk.
• Crosswalks at Wall and Franklin streets and at Fair and Henry streets, near George
Washington, will be improved.
