ADACAS Recognise Know Act Project
A supported decision making project
30-38 hrs per week

Can you create change to improve outcomes for people with disability accessing the health sector in the
Act?
ADACAS, a rights based advocacy organization based in the ACT, is seeking two change makers to join
our project team in delivering the Recognise Know Act Project (RKA). Through research, training,
mentoring and awareness raising activities the RKA project aims to improve participation and access for
people with impaired decision making ability in mainstream health services. Supported Decision Making,
(SDM) which gives people with impaired decision making ability the support they need to decide,
provides the access framework for this project.
Project and Communications Officer- Supported Decision Making
SCHADS level 5
Working with the Project Team, the Project Officer will
 Liaise with stakeholders, including individuals with impaired decision making ability, their
families and carers, as well as health care providers to recognize and understand barriers to
access in the ACT health sector.
 Contribute to the development of awareness raising and skill building resources across a range of
media including written, digital and social media.
 Collaborate to develop and deliver training packages.
 Provide support for decision making to individuals with impaired decision making ability from
time to time. This may include development of advance health care plan documents, or
facilitation of decision support networks.
 Work with health care professionals to provide mentorship and recommendations that affect
organizational change.
 Other projects as requested by the Project Coordinator or CEO.
We are seeking an experienced project officer who can demonstrate
 Commitment or interest in improving outcomes for people with disability using a human rights/
social justice framework.
 Creative problem solving with ability to affect change.
 Ability to apply change management and/or community development using innovative
approaches.
 Experience developing and delivering awareness raising activities, including social media,
information resources and training. Experience with digital story telling would be an advantage.
 A current drivers licence.

1. Demonstrated commitment to improving outcomes for people using social justice framework.
Where you do not have direct experience you might include examples that describe your
approach to on the job learning. .
2. Demonstrated examples of creative problem solving and critical thinking.
3. Demonstrated ability to deliver project outcomes, individually and within team.
4. Demonstrated successful outcomes for capacity building and awareness raising projects using a
range of strategies.
5. Experience developing social media campaign including analysis of online data.
6. Demonstrated high level communication skills including, provision of written advice for a broad
range of audiences, negotiation skills, as well as highly developed verbal and non-verbal
communication skills. Knowledge of Assistive and Augmented Technology would be an
advantage.
Project Officer– Supported Decision Making
SCHADS level 3/4
We are seeking a creative, motivated project officer who can demonstrate:
 Commitment or interest in improving outcomes for people with disability using a human rights/
social justice framework
 Ability to build and support relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders
 Skills to collaborate in the development of information resources
 Excellent organisational skills to support a busy team
 Ability to work cooperatively and enthusiastically as part of a team.
Working within a team, the Project Officer will:
 Engage with project participants on an individual and group level to provide information and
support
 Create and share information resources
 Collect and manage data and information
 Provide general clerical support including filing, photocopying, management of correspondence
and other administrative tasks
 Undertake organisation and promotion of forums, training and events
 Other projects as requested by the Project Coordinator or CEO.
Project Officer Selection Criteria
1. Sensitivity to the needs of people with disability and their carers. Where you do not have direct
experience you might include examples that describe your approach to on the job learning
2. Highly developed written and oral communication skills and excellent listening skills
3. Demonstrated ability to build and support relationships with a range of stakeholders
4. Experience using Microsoft Office and managing client data
5. Experience organising forums, training and events
6. Experience providing support to team members.

In addition to the selection criteria the successful candidates would ideally be able to demonstrate the
following skills
Communication: Ability to adapt communication styles to a wide audience using a range of skills and
media.
Negotiation Skills: mediation, assertion, empathy, recognition of personal bias
Research skills: critical thinking, problem solving and curiosity for new learning
Able to build capacity/empowerment: recognition of boundaries; cultural sensitivity, self-reflection
Administrative: self-motivation, organisation and competence in data base management and record
keeping for confidential materials.
The positions are for 1 year with opportunity for extension dependent on further funding. Start date is
as soon as possible. The Project Officer and Communications Officer will work as part of the SDM
project team under the SCHADS award. Flexible work hours and on the job training are available to the
successful candidate.
