WHY
Team Building?
Because today’s Innovative Executives are
“Coach Managers” - managing their
businesses like a head coach.
Both play to win and the lessons are the same.

Key Concepts and Ideas
on Team Building and
Leadership Development
“A HANDS-ON APPROACH!”
The eventual key to success is not only how
hard each individual works, but how hard
they work at working together.
“We want to create an organization
where people want to be!”
(Roger Neilson - Order of Canada, NHL Hall of Fame)
Why invest time and resources?
Great teams don’t happen by accident
- they are built!
Team assessment and team building are necessary
investments because every team needs constant work
or maintenance. Teamwork brings competitive
advantages to organizations. Teams that lack trust waste
time and energy managing behaviors and interactions,
dread team meetings and are reluctant to take risks or
ask for or give help. Therefore low morale and
employee retention.
Participating in engaging challenging activities, which
occur away from the school, sports venues, office, etc,
enhances team chemistry, teamwork skills and
performance factors.
Ridding your teams of cliques and creating “Team
Players” generates greater individual contribution and
sense of community belonging.
“Shared experiences make people strong!”
(Lance Armstrong - 7 times Tour de France Champion)
“It is amazing what can be
accomplished when no one cares
who gets the credit!”
(John Wooden NCAA BB )
“There is incredible power and fun created
when everyone works together to overcome
a challenge or achieve a goal!”
(Larryland Adventures)
There is a need to create a winning
environment where everyone feels
connected and supported, and
appreciated for their role and
contribution.

(Patrick Lencioni’s “Five Dysfunctions of Team”)
Rationale for Building Connections
(from Dr. Jim Cain, Ph.D. )
Corporations
“Even our current conventional wisdom on
organizational effectiveness shows that there are
three things required for highly effective teams:
i)
A clearly identified, articulated and worthy
task. People need to have a sense of TASK
being worthwhile, job worth doing,
ii) The opportunity for growth, advancement
and building new skills
iii) The opportunity to create connection and
maintain relationships with other members
of the group. Sometimes referred to as the
‘social capital’ of the organization.
Corporations have discovered that employee
retention and engagement improves as an employee
feels a sense of connection in the workplace.
Workers or employees who have a connection to a
friend at work take fewer sick days, are more
engaged and have less chance of leaving the
company, therefore greater employee retention.
Conclusion: “The organizations which provide all
three or meet all three of these needs have the
highest functioning employee retention. Thus they
save money lost through lack of productivity or
sick days.”

Tom Rath study and National Longitudinal Study
on Adolescent Health (funded near the time of
Columbine), he found that students who have a
connection to family and their school are incredibly
well insulated from 14 out of 15 traditionally risky
adolescent behaviours.
Student relationships and connections the more they know about someone the less
likely they are to hurt them.
Human Synergistics - Creating Productive
Synergistic “Real” Teams Vs “Pseudo”
Teams
As per Dr. Cains “Opportunity for Growth and
Connection”:
Human Synergistics options are available,
which are used around the world to create
positive, constructive Individual, Team and
Organizational Growth or Organizational
Cultural Change.
(i)
Offers opportunity to explore a deeper
understanding of Self, the Team or
Organizational Culture.
(ii) Learn how to make Constructive
Change, after identifying Strengths and
Developmental Needs of the individual,
groups or organizations.
(iii) Learn the benefits of Constructive
thinking and behavioral dimensions vs
Passive Defensive and Aggressive
Defensive Styles.
(iv) The Human Synergistics opportunity for
change gives a sense of direction as to
where and how to change in order to
increase effectiveness.
There are survival or business simulations,
which are very engaging and illustrate the
concept that “Two Heads are Better than One”,
at least if you are a synergistic group and utilize
the resources (human and material) available
effectively, as well as an effective problem
solving process.
