UKCP College of Medical Psychotherapy Inaugural AGM
Dr Chris Mace Memorial Lecture
"The danger of trading measures but not meeting distressed minds:
'outcome' measurement in MH and psychological therapies."
Professor Chris Evans, Consultant Psychiatrist in Psychotherapy and
Professor of Psychotherapy Nottingham University.
“When, about 18 years ago, we started the CORE (Clinical outcomes in
routine evaluation) project and design of the CORE-OM, Chris Mace was very
supportive particularly within SPR (the Society for Psychotherapy Research).
The CORE-OM was designed to be a cheap/free but well enough designed
lowest common denominator or shared core for self-report measurement of
change in therapy; a "PROM" before that acronym existed. Though the
CORE work did much good it is now linked with a shift to outcomes based
commissioning and to sessional measurement in therapy, what I term
"power assisted steering for therapies". This presentation will summarise
many dangers in these developments and will explore how we might learn
from other measurement paradigms in general practice and general medicine
and use some ideas from Chris. The dangers of misusing change measures
are huge though the potential to use them well remains available if we are
brave enough to address the challenges.”
Professor Chris Evans is a consultant medical psychotherapist who, like
Chris Mace, trained at St. George's and at the Institute of Group Analysis
(IGA). He has long been interested in public health issues as well as
psychological therapies and in psychometrics and has published over 100
peer-reviewed papers.
He holds a personal chair in the University of
Nottingham and is Vice-Chair of the IGA. He has worked in Rampton
"special" hospital and clinically and academically in eating and personality
disorders and now works in a community PD service in Nottingham. As well
as his analytic/dynamic trainings he has a second training in family/systemic
therapies
