Careers and Technical Programs
Myths and realities:
setting the record straight
u
Myth #1: Technical programs are not for
students with good grades.
u  Reality!
u
This is simply not true!
u
The reality is that technical programs
require individuals with a strong
academic foundation in reading and
writing, math and sciences.
u
Myth #2: University is the
only path to a good career.
u  Reality!
u
Achieving a Technical DCS
is also a ticket to a good
future, given the high
demand, good pay, and
travel opportunities
involved.
u
Myth #3: Technical Programs
don’t lead to university.
u  Reality!
u
Tech programs do lead to
university studies in nursing,
engineering, design, business
and education, to name but a
few.
u
In fact, some programs get
advanced university standing,
which can cut the time to get a
Bachelor’s Degree by 1 to 2
years.
u
Myth #4: Technologist’s work is
dirty, noisy and unpleasant.
u
Reality!
u
There is no doubt that the work
of technologists is “hands-on”
work – but it’s designer handson work.
u
Many people work in the
technologies because handson work can be far more
rewarding than a job that is
theoretical.
u
Myth #5: Many Tech jobs are not
for Women.
u
Reality!
Most technologist’s work requires
dexterity, good hand-eye
coordination and attention to
detail – all attributes that women
equally possess along with men.
u
u
Companies are looking for female
technologists to balance their
workforce and demonstrate
diversity and inclusion.
u
Myth #6: Tech programs
are harder for women
because people think
men are better in
science/construction/
computers.
Reality!
u  Today’s young women are perfectly capable of studying
science to become computer, electrical, or building
engineers as well as doctors and dentists.
u
u
Tech programs also lead to careers as project managers,
sales reps and other positions that require “people skills”
which women often excel at.
u
Myth #7: There are no
women in your class so it’s
hard to fit in and guys don’t
take you seriously.
u
Reality!
u
Women often do better
than the young men in tech
programs because they
work hard. It doesn’t take
long for the men to take
the women seriously.
u
Myth #8 Some technical
programs aren’t meant for
men.
u
Reality!
u
Men are also needed in
areas traditionally serviced
by women. Society needs
young men who are nurses,
respiratory therapists,
special care counsellors or
early childhood educators.
u
Myth #9 There is no
professional status in being
a technology graduate.
u
Reality!
u
Many technologists belong
to professional orders such
as the OIIQ, OPIQ, OTPQ,
OTTDQ, OPTMQ and
OTIMROEPMQ, which all
possess a code of ethics
and are legally recognized
by the government of
Quebec.
u
Myth #10: A technologist’s job
is a dead end job.
u
Reality!
u
The Careers and Technical
Programs offer not just jobs, but
careers!
u
There are many chances for
advancement to supervisory and
management positions, to the
possibility of owning your own
business.
