The Long Ashton Horticultural Society Dear Members, I am looking over my flower beds, which I have just filled with colourful bedding plants, only to hear that we could be in for a cold spot (with perhaps snow!). Maybe I have been a bit quick off the mark, but the sunshine encourages us to get out into the garden and start sorting out the beds, dig out the weeds and start potting on some of those early vegetable seedlings. If you have a few gaps, then do come along to our Plant Sale on Saturday 20 May and pick up some locally grown bargains to add to your garden; or if you have an embarrassment of vegetable seedlings of a certain type, or left over seeds, then please donate them so that others can enjoy the taste of home grown veg. After last year’s informative visit to Brackenwood Garden Centre, in this March we took a trip to Riverside Garden Centre to hear how they operate and have an explanation of the plants they offer. We are now looking at other possible trips so please let us have any ideas. Our talk last Autumn on Oriental Gardens was inspirational (I have since seen gardens in Japan) and we are hoping to have a different talk later in the year. Finally, please make sure you have Saturday 2 September in your diary as the date of the Show; Schedules will be available online www.lahortsoc.co.uk and photos of last year’s Show may give you some ideas and you can find out more information about our forthcoming events. Happy gardening! The money raised from the Plant Sale is used to help with the cost of putting on the annual Flower Show. But we need plants to sell. Please can you sow a few extra seeds, or take a few extra cuttings to be donated to the stall. Vegetable seedlings are particularly requested.
