Bonn Steichen & Partners Luxembourg : Howald move is first for Luxembourg law firm Bonn Steichen & Partners has become the first Luxembourg law firm to take advantage of a change in the law last December enabling them to establish their offices outside the capital, moving into a new building in Howald at the beginning of April. Breaking new ground Bonn Steichen & Partners, one of the two law firms created by last year’s dissolution of Bonn Schmitt Steichen, has broken new ground for the grand duchy’s legal sector by moving to offices outside Luxembourg City. This only became possible from December 16 last year when legislation amending a law of August 10, 1991 abolished a requirement that law firms have their registered office within the territory of the capital. Several days after the new law was passed, Bonn, Steichen & Partners agreed to lease a large part of the C2 building in Howald, part of the three-building Cubus complex bordering the Hesperange woods. Certified environmental sustainability The formal agreement was signed in January for a nine-year lease commencing on April 1, 2012. The law firm moved in over the course of that weekend. The C2 and neighbouring C3 buildings, developed by Luxembourg real estate promoter Prodomos, are the first in Luxembourg to receive BREEAM certification for environmentally sustainable design, construction and operation. According to Bonn Steichen & Partners, its choice of offices was guided by easy of access from the motorway network and from the airport, availability of parking, the flexibility of the building’s technical infrastructure and its striking architecture, designed by the European P.arc Partnership for Architecture network. Luxembourg firm with international reach Bonn Steichen & Partners is a full service Luxembourg law firm that currently comprises more than 60 professionals, including eight partners, serving both local and international clients across a wide range of legal disciplines. The firm’s practice areas include corporate, banking, finance and investment work; tax, employment, compensation and benefits; real estate and construction; dispute resolution; and intellectual property. Bonn Steichen & Partners was formed after the partnership agreement of Bonn Schmitt Steichen, created through a 1999 merger, was dissolved in June 2011, reportedly after disagreements over management and strategy. Two successor firms, Bonn Steichen & Partners and Bonn & Schmitt, were formally created at the beginning of this year. In recent years Bonn Schmitt Steichen advised on high-profile deals including the acquisition of Arcelor by Mittal Steel in 2008 and of Fortis by BNP Paribas the following year.
