Parents: Why proper dental care is important for your child
Taking care of your child’s teeth properly now is extremely
important, as bacteria won’t wait until they’re older to
strike. In fact, they are in your child’s mouth right now,
creating acids that break down tooth enamel (the hard
outer shell of your tooth). Left alone, this acid will create
holes in your child’s teeth called cavities, which can mean
bad breath, pain and more trips to the dentist.
Preventing tooth decay
It’s actually pretty easy for your child to develop good
dental habits. Encourage your child to:
For more oral health
tips and games, visit the
Dental Health Center at
UnitedConcordia.com.
• Brush twice a day—Show your child how to use short,
gentle strokes, for two to three minutes each time, and
don’t forget to brush the tongue!
• Floss once a day—Forgetting to floss means your child is
missing over a third of each tooth’s surface.
• Visit the dentist regularly—Many people don’t realize that no matter how well you
brush, there will still be “stuff” on your teeth that you can’t get off, and only a professional
can. So, be sure to bring your child to the dentist twice a year to make sure that your
child’s teeth stay clean and healthy, and that the dentist can catch any issues before they
become big problems.
Avoiding sugary and sticky foods
Soda, sweetened tea and energy drinks all contain a lot of sugar, and while your child is
drinking them, the sugar constantly coats your teeth. This sugar feeds the bacteria that are
naturally present in your child’s mouth, creating acids that break down enamel. In addition,
sticky foods (like taffy and some candy) and foods that get stuck in teeth (like potato chips)
also hold sugars against your child’s teeth longer than necessary. Cutting these out, or at least
cutting down on these foods, can help keep your child’s mouth healthy for a lifetime.
Don’t rush! Brush 2-3.
Be gentle — harder is not better
Reach those recesses
Use a 45-degree angle
Short strokes are crucial
Have a replacement toothbrush ready
2-3 minutes, twice a day is all it takes
