To understand the reasons why people choose to work or not to work. TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES: 2 mins: Teacher explanation of the meaning of the words: • • • 2 mins: Work - where people perform jobs in exchange for money and other benefits Employee - Person working Employer - Person/Business employing Pair activity: 2 minutes to think of as many reasons as possible why people work. Answers may include • to earn money • because we don’t know what else to do (bored) • because we simply love the job • comradeship with colleagues • to achieve something which is personally satisfying • to help others 8 mins: Whole class feedback: (pupils/teacher write bullet points on the board). Teacher-led explanation going through the bullet points giving examples where necessary, eg nursing = to help others 2 mins: Pair activity: 2 minutes to think of as many reasons as possible why people may choose not to work.
