TEACHING AND LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
2 mins:
Teacher explanation of the meaning of the words:

2 mins:
Work - where people perform jobs in exchange for money and
other benefits
Employee - Person working
Employer - Person/Business employing
Pair activity: 2 minutes to think of as many reasons as possible why
people work.
Answers may include
• to earn money
• because we don’t know what else to do (bored)
• because we simply love the job
• comradeship with colleagues
• to achieve something which is personally satisfying
• to help others
8 mins:
Whole class feedback: (pupils/teacher write bullet points on the board).
Teacher-led explanation going through the bullet points giving examples
where necessary, eg nursing = to help others
2 mins:
Pair activity: 2 minutes to think of as many reasons as possible why
people may choose not to work.
Answers may include
• in full-time education
• retired
• incapacitated in some way
• not skilled or educated enough
• bringing up children
• lazy
• state benefits are good enough
• in prison

Using www.connexions-direct.com and other suitable websites, find an
appropriate job/career for each of the following stages of a person’s
lifecycle:

someone who has been working for a while and has got promoted
someone who has retired but wants to keep themselves busy
For each of these situations you need to find out the following information
about the job:
