Intramural Sports Co-Rec Volleyball Rules Registration: This must be done on the IM Leagues website: www.imleagues.com and in accordance with the roster specifications set for the league. The rosters must be registered and meet the roster specifications by the stated time and date or your team WILL NOT be included in the season schedule. Eligibility: All Siena College Intramurals participants must be FULL-TIME Siena College students, faculty, staff, or administrators. Alcohol and Drug Policy: There will be NO alcohol or drug use permitted during, or associated with Siena College Intramurals. No participant may show up and/or participate in Intramural Sports while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. Substance abuse is a serious offense and will be dealt with accordingly. A meeting will be held with the Intramural Coordinator to determine the penalty for such an offense. Please note that campus safety and other parts of the administration may also be involved in this process. Divisions: Divisions will vary from year to year based on the level of participation. More teams necessitate the need for more divisions. The top teams (number to be determined each year by how many teams participate in the league) from each division will advance to the playoff rounds. 1 Playoffs: Single elimination rules will be in effect. The winning team will advance to the next round and the losing team will be finished for the season. Play will continue until a champion is crowned. Sportsmanship: There will be a sportsmanship score awarded to each team at the end of each match. Poor sportsmanship of any kind including but not limited to: use of profanities, arguing with opposing team, teammates, or officials, fighting, intentionally injuring a member of the opposing team, leaving the courts “trashed”, etc. will result in points being taken away and teams potentially being ineligible for the playoffs. Intramural staff will be the judge of this and their word is final. Sportsmanship Rating: 1 – 5, 1 being the WORST, 5 being the BEST. 3.5 overall rating required to make the playoffs. Sportsmanship Rating – 5: Excellent sportsmanship, NO arguing (with staff or other team), NO backtalk, clean play, NO fighting, NO major penalties (red cards, personal fouls, etc.) Sportsmanship Rating – 4: Good sportsmanship, clean play, minimal arguing/back-talk (with staff or other team), NO fighting, NO major penalties (red cards, personal fouls, etc.) Sportsmanship Rating – 3: Average sportsmanship, minimal rough play, arguing/back-talk (with staff or other team), minimal pushing and shoving, any major penalties (red cards, personal fouls, etc.) Sportsmanship Rating – 2: Mediocre Sportsmanship, overly rough/physical play, constant arguing (with staff or other team), a lot of pushing and shoving, excess of major penalties (red cards, personal fouls, etc.) Sportsmanship Rating – 1: Poor Sportsmanship, constant rough/physical play, ANY fighting/violence, constant arguing (with staff or other team), excess of major penalties (red cards, personal fouls, etc.), FORFEITING Intramural student-staff is to be considered an extension of the Intramural Coordinator and thus an extension of the Siena College Athletics Department. Therefore, there will be no poor treatment of any intramural staff. Mistreatment of the staff will result in a penalty to be decided at the discretion of the Intramural Coordinator up to and including expulsion from the league. Forfeits and Cancellations: As the IM Leagues website allows students to enter their availabilities for games, there will be very limited rescheduling, to be determined by the Intramural Coordinator. Teams must arrive and check in 10 minutes PRIOR to game time. Ten minutes from the scheduled start time will be allowed for teams to arrive. After ten minutes have passed any teams not meeting league requirements will forfeit the game. Teams will lose points for forfeiting a game. Continual forfeiting may result in a team being removed from the league. 2 Protests: The rulings of the intramural student-staff are considered final. Extreme situations may be reviewed by the Intramural Coordinator. Champions: The members of the championship team will receive Intramural Championship t-shirts and will have a team picture posted on the intramurals bulletin board and website. In the future, these teams MAY go on to compete against championship teams from other colleges and universities. Courts: All games will be played in the Callanan Fieldhouse, which is located in the Marcelle Athletic Complex. Start of Play: The coin toss winner may elect to serve, receive serve, or choose side. The team not serving first in the game shall serve first in the second game. A new coin toss is performed before the third game, if necessary. Play: Six players per team are allowed on the court at a time. A minimum of four players is necessary to begin and continue play, two (2) males and two (2) females. If the ball is touched two (2) or three (3) times before going over the net, BOTH a male AND a female must each touch the ball first. Matches will consist of a best-of-three game series (25, 25, 15). Games will be rally scored. All games will use a win-by-two format. The first two games will cap at 30 and the third game (if necessary) will cap at 20 (the first team to reach the cap wins). Each team will be granted one 60-second timeout per game. Each team is allowed a maximum of three successive contacts of the ball in order to return the ball to the opponent’s area. Blocks do not count as a contact. Blocking or attacking a serve is illegal. Serves that hit the net are in play. All passes must be clearly contacted, not thrown or lifted. A back row player may spike providing that he/she jumps from behind the 10-foot line. 3 Substitutions: Substitutions may only occur during dead balls. Teams may elect to rotate all players in one at a time through the server’s position or may substitute player for player. The team must indicate which method will be used at the start of each set. Lines: Any ball landing on the line is good. The server must stand entirely behind the end line until he or she strikes the ball. A player’s foot/hand may land on the center line provided it is not entirely over the line. Net Play: Players may reach over the net and block the ball, provided the opposing team has completed their attempt to return the ball over the net. Players must not make contact with the net. If a player makes contact with the net, the opposing team will be awarded the point. The ball is considered to have crossed the net when any part of the ball is extended over the net. Teams must rotate clockwise after receiving a side-out. Co-Rec Modifications: Neither gender may outnumber the opposite gender by more than two players on the court. Teams must have two males and two females to start play. The service order and positions on the court must alternate between male and female players. If a team uses two or three hits to return the ball, BOTH a male AND a female must EACH touch the ball first. *All rules not specifically covered in this document will be enforced as NFHS Volleyball Rules. *All rules are subject to change by the Intramural Sports staff.
