In 2011 alone, Peninsula Coop donated more than $400,000 dollars to local charities and organizations including the Queen Alexandra Hospital Foundation, Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation, Power to Be, Victoria Women’s Transition House, Victoria Rowing Club – Elk Lake boathouse, Santas Anonymous, BC Children’s Hospital, Tour de Rock, literacy programs, local schools, seniors’ groups, KidSport, Cadets, Scouts, 4H, youth Sport Teams and many, many more. We make these contributions because we care about our community. We are locally owned and operated which means our children go to the same schools and our families share the same values. By giving back to our community we can ensure that we all have a successful future. There are many options on Southern Vancouver Island for fuel and groceries, but only Peninsula Co-op, with our unique co-operative structure, remains a locally owned business able to give back thousands of dollars each year. W Canada Day 2011 Peninsula Co-op is moving ahead by giving back Peninsula Co-op to provide $100,000 to help fund Jeneece Place eneece Place is a project of the Queen Alexandra Foundation (QAF) for Children. It began as the dream of 17-year-old Jeneece Edroff who has raised over one million dollars to help children and youth with special needs. Known as ‘the Penny Girl’, Jeneece’s penny drive brought in over $1.5 million to help children throughout B.C. With that achievement behind her, Jeneece set her sights on a new goal – Jeneece Place – a temporary home where families can stay together when one of their members needs medical services in Victoria. Jeneece Place is located a twominute walk to the entrance of the Victoria General Hospital. At 10,500 square feet, Jeneece Place will have 10 bedrooms able to accommodate up to two adults and two children each. It will also have a communal kitchen, dining, living, games and media rooms, and an outdoor area where kids can play. The facility will be open year-round, 24 hours a day, and will be wheelchair-accessible and barrier-free. In priority order, accommodation at Jeneece Place will be given to: • Families from Vancouver Island and the Gulf islands whose children and youth need medical care in Victoria. This could include services at the Victoria General Hospital, the Queen Alexandra Centre for Children’s Health, in paediatricians’ or other specialists’ offices, or at other care facilities. • Families of children and youth in the Capital Regional District where the stress of multiple trips to the hospital is compounding a difficult situation. • Families with children under age 19 where one of the parents is in the J Victoria General Hospital and the rest of the family wants to visit. • Pregnant women from the central, north and southwest parts of the Island who need to be close to the hospital. • Other families with children may be accommodated if room is available. The Queen Alexandra Foundation for Children is raising $4.5 million to build, furnish, equip and operate Jeneece Place. Peninsula Co-op is proud to join with like-minded local businesses and community groups in supporting this worthy cause. The Peninsula Co-op community fund will provide $100,000 over five years to help fund Jeneece Place. Ms. Mel Hernblad, Peninsula Co-op Director, notes that Jeneece Place fits perfectly with Peninsula Co-op’s mandate to support Island communities. “With our network of Peninsula Co-op stations stretching from Duncan to Sidney, we see many families travelling to Victoria for care. It is our pleasure and honour to support this worthwhile project that will ease the burden on families in crisis. It is thanks to our members that we are able to offer this support; I am confident that some of them will be making use of Jeneece Place so we are happy to help.” For her part, Jeneece was overwhelmed at Peninsula Co-op’s generosity. “This is an amazing gift. Peninsula Co-op’s donation is going to help us fund a games room at Jeneece Place where kids can relax and have fun and get a break from their stressful situations. I’m just learning how to drive and you can be sure when I get my licence, I’ll be filling up at Peninsula Co-op!” Ron Heal, General Manager with raffle winner Dorothy Michell Win Free Gas for a Year raffle T hank you to all Peninsula Co-op customers who purchased a raffle ticket to “Win Free Gas for a Year!” 3952 tickets were sold, helping to raise funds for Tour de Rock!
