My Dear Sons and Daughters in Christ the Lord,
There is frequently a lot of anxiety and worry surrounding Election Day. This year is no
exception. And since anxiety and worry frequently and easily give way to despondency, despair
and apathy, it is important to have a plan not only to overcome these temptations, but to bring
about the best outcome for our country.
Here’s a three-part plan to help make election day a victory for Christ, no matter which
candidates win:
First, remember to oppose the culture of death. Laws and politicians who claim to legitimize
abortion and assisted suicide must be resisted at the polls. Men and women of good will have
the obligation in the sight of God publicly to rebuke the culture of death. This way, even if such
laws continue to prevail, there will be a healthy and outspoken resistance upon which to build
future opposition.
Second, remember those who cannot vote in this election. There are many sick and disabled
people who for understandable and good reasons are unable to participate in the election. There
are our young people who are not yet 18 years old. There are many visitors to our country who
lawfully enter our country but are unable to vote because of their foreign citizenship. There are
also those who, through no fault of their own, whose ignorance or impoverished appreciation of
their citizenship will prevent them from participating. And there are those generations not yet
born who will inherit the consequences of our decisions. This increases our responsibility for
making the right choices at the polls.
Thirdly, remember your vocation: As Christian laymen and laywomen, who else will see to it
that our government and our laws will be illuminated by the light of Christ? Who else will care
to order our society so as to be best positioned to hear the Gospel? Who else will care about the
everyday matters—both big and small—of public and private life in such a way as to ensure the
God-given dignity of all human life? This is particularly the privilege and duty of lay men and
women. Faithful participation on Election Day will redound to your personal holiness.
Perhaps the seriousness of this year’s election will also inspire more good people to offer to
serve in our nation’s public life.
Most importantly, however, we should pray to God to protect and provide our country and all
who lead our country with the salvation it requires.
Sincerely your spiritual father in Christ,
Fr. Drew
