MudCrew : THE QUEST : Event Guide Friday 19th and Saturday 20th May 2017 King Arthur's home was at a place called Tintagel. Here he built a castle, an impenetrable fortress, overlooking the ocean, on the most dramatic of coast lines. Arthurs brave knights carried out acts of chivalry, rescuing damsels in distress and fighting against strange beasts and they met at his round table. Under the guidance of his sorcerer Merlin, Arthur obtained “Excalibur” a magical sword from The Lady Of The Lake and with this weapon he vanquished many foes. They searched for lost treasures, such as the Holy Grail which they believed would bring them eternal life. Did Arthur ever find the Grail? Either way, the legend comes alive with MudCrew’s THE QUEST. A weekend coastpath running festival covering some of the most spectacular and challenging coast path Cornwall has to offer. You have a choice of events : The Quest Castle to Castle 10mile - a great introduction to coastpath running. The Quest 40 – 40 mile ultra marathon - compete solo or as a relay pair. The Quest 24 – 24 hour endurance event. Whichever you choose, it’ll be an epic journey as you retrace Arthur’s footsteps and seek the relics from the legend before returning them to King Arthurs spectacular ancestral home at Tintagel Castle and complete….THE QUEST MudCrew : THE QUEST Castle to Castle 10mile : Event Guide Saturday 20th May 2017 – 12:00 noon Tintagel Castle was the home, the stronghold of King Arthur. It was imperative that it was guarded at all times, against potential enemies, keen to breach its fortresses and plunder the treasures that lay within. Whilst Arthur and his Knights were absent, the safety of his home was left in the capable hands of his many foot soldiers. Some would remain within the grounds, ensuring no land based attacks were launched but the Castle was vulnerable in other ways, not least from it boundaries with the Atlantic Ocean. 5 miles from the Castle, North of Tintagel, lies Boscastle Harbour, a natural point of attack. Become one of the foot soldiers for the day and take on this challenge, The Castle To Castle 10 Mile Coastpath run. Reach Boscastle Harbour, collect a relic as proof and return it to The Castle, where you will be presented with a medal. This is an ideal introduction to coast path running. The terrain in this part of Cornwall makes running it a challenge but the distance allows entry level to this type of event. There is no compulsory kit list for this event but we strongly recommend trail shoes and appropriate clothing for the weather conditions on the day. Entry. He gave them many tasks, requiring skill and determination to complete successfully. He expected them to work well as a team and help each other in times of extreme peril. They were sent out, often as a large pack and with their own roles to play, to complete the task in hand. Their combined skills would determine their success. However, as with any large group of warriors, they would vie with each other to be the best. Their intention was often to curry favour with their master and be raised in his esteem. Here at MudCrew, we are no different. We invite the very best amongst you to take part in our 24 hour extreme event, possibly the toughest 24 hour event this fair land has to offer, in an attempt to become : The Ultra Knight Of The Round Table! The rules, the concept of this event are simple in their brutality, or maybe brutal in their simplicity if you prefer. To complete this event, you must remain on the course for the full 24 hours. Within the checkpoint, you will find Excalibur, soundly fixed within the stone. Each time you enter the checkpoint, you must touch Excalibur. However, you may announce yourself as retired from the event by simply removing Excalibur from the stone and raising it aloft. The temptation to do this will be high but should be resisted at all costs as there is simply no going back from this situation. Can you lay hands on the sword without removing it from the stone? Only the strongest of character will accomplish this. Event HQ. The Event HQ and registration will be at the same location as the race start and finish. Tintagel Castle, Cornwall, UK. PL34 0HE. Entry. Entry is online via the MudCrew website www.mudcrew.co.uk Cost of entry is £85.00 + £15.00 for compulsory GPS Tracker (+£5 unaffiliated). The Quest 24 will be utilising a GPS tracker system to monitor distance and for safety purposes. Course Description. You will set off from The Castle at Tintagel and run up the Castle steps to the Coastpath above. From here, you will run along the Coastpath to Trebarwith Strand and up to the rear of The Port William pub, where you will find the second set of steps, 203 to be precise. You will turn around and return to The Castle via The Coastpath. You will return to the race start where your “leg” will be recorded. Then, repeat, for 24 hours! Because even we understand that this is fairly tough, we will be kind and will allow you a MAXIMUM of a 10 minute stay, each time you reach the Castle. Any runner who remains for longer that 10 minutes will be deemed unwilling to continue and will be DQd. This will be strictly adhered to and there will be no exceptions. You may have a crew member at The Castle checkpoint but only there. You may also have a drop bag within the checkpoint which you may access during each return to the Castle. This must contain your required supplies. It is not compulsory to have a crew member but it is strongly recommended. 10 minutes is not very long to obtain what you may require. There is a compulsory kit list which you can leave at the checkpoint and have access to at the end of each leg. You will be running through the night and will require a good head torch. At the start of each leg, when you leave the Castle, you will climb the Castle steps. These are steep and uneven and care must be taken. The remainder of the route is Coastpath with a very short road crossing at Trebarwith Strand. You will need trail shoes. When you return to the Castle, you will come down via the Coastpath, avoiding the Castle steps but you will always go up those steps. Navigation will not be an issue, especially after the first leg. MudCrew race directors will be on hand for the duration of this event but support will be minimal. We will provide water at The Castle, both cold and hot, for you or you crew to use. The 24 hour event will start at 6pm.
