Grade 5 Science Instructional Resources
Quarter 2
Weeks 4
Big Idea 10: Forms of Energy - Energy exists in different
forms and can change from one form to another.
Big Idea 11: Energy Transfer & Transformations - Waves
involve a transfer of energy without a transfer of matter.
Water and sound waves transfer energy through a material.
Light waves can travel through a vacuum and through
matter.
Big Idea 10: Forms of Energy
SC.5.P.10.1, SC.5.P.10.2, SC.P.10.3, SC.5.P.10.4
Big Idea 11: Energy Transfer and Transformations

Practice of Science Benchmarks:
Practice of Science benchmarks should be ongoing through all content instruction. Please refer to them
when planning for teaching and learning and monitoring students’ understanding of the scientific
processes.

Performance Task:
Goal: Your goal is to provide potential energy efficient and sustainability practices and solutions to your school leadership. Your challenge will be to make suggestions
related to how people use the school facilities. Your proposal will need to be based upon research and the research conducted within your school. Explain the
environmental benefits related to your decisions.
Role: Your class has been asked to conduct research related to energy efficiency and sustainable practices around the school. You will need to decide how to conduct
this research and make decisions as to what you are looking for in your research. You will need to conduct research related to energy efficient practices, as well as
ideas to create sustainable schools. With this information you will want to create ways that the members of the school community can do better. This information will
be highlighted at a school board meeting, and your class has been asked to present.
Audience: Your audience will include school leaders and the school board. You will need to provide them with information related to the
research you conducted around the school. You will want to give them ideas to improve the school's energy efficiency and sustainable
practices. You will also want to educate them on why this is important. The leaders have also asked you to create products to share around the
school and with the community to help get everyone involved.
Situation: As concerns grow about the environment and human interactions, it is becoming increasingly important to utilize energy efficient and sustainable practices
whenever possible.
Product:
-Create a series of posters that can be placed around the school and in public paces such as supermarkets. Each poster should focus on a separate energy efficient
idea or sustainable practice.
Grade 5 Energy
1
-Create a multimedia presentation convincing school board members, teachers, and students to improve the school's energy efficiency and sustainable practices.
PLC Question #1
PLC Question #2
How will we know if and when they have learned it?
Learning Goal(s)/ Objectives:
What do we expect ALL students to learn?
Monitoring Learning Sample Items & Resources
PLC Question #3
How will WE design learning experiences for ALL
students?
Question #4 - when students don’t learn?
Question #5 – when students already get it?
