Keyport Central School Chapter of National Junior Honor Society Advisor: Director of Guidance: Mrs. Amanda Andrews Mr. Anthony DePasquale Principal: Mr. Anthony Rapolla National Junior Honor Society A national organization Established in 1929 by the National Association of Secondary School Principals Recognizes students with outstanding accomplishments Scholarship Leadership Citizenship Service Membership in NJHS is an Honor and Privilege Students do not “apply”, they are selected Must be in 7th or 8th grade Membership is Based on Five Categories Scholarship Character Leadership Service Citizenship Scholarship: Academic achievement of 93.0 percent grade point average All marking period grades count toward calculating the GPA Leadership: Resourceful in proposing new problems and suggesting solutions Demonstrate initiative Exercise positive influence on peers Exemplify positive attitudes Demonstrate positive behavior Demonstrate reliability and dependability Work efficiently and effectively Is a leader in the classroom Leadership Activities Positions in which the student was responsible for directing or motivating others Team Captain Newspaper editor Community leader Service: Actions done on behalf of others without compensation Volunteer Mentor Participate in activities outside of school Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, religious groups etc. Types of Community Service Accepted by NJHS: Religious service projects Organized walk-a-thons First Aid/ First Departments including EMT training/Police Explorer Girl Scouts/ Boy Scouts Habitat for Humanity Public Libraries Sports Camps- volunteer service only Types of Community Service Accepted by NJHS: Community Day Tutoring Soup Kitchens Senior Centers Types of volunteer work NOT considered community service: Service at a family owned business Private babysitting Helping a neighbor Work with an organization where volunteering is a requirement Internships Political campaigns If you received any pay or benefits for your work it is NOT considered volunteer work Character: Trustworthiness Respect Responsibility Fairness Caring Citizenship Citizenship: The student who demonstrates citizenship understands the importance of civic involvement Has a high regard for freedom and justice Respects laws Demonstrates mature participation and responsibility through involvement in community organizations and school clubs Selection Process STEP 1: Cumulative GPA calculated Students who met the Scholarship criteria of 93.0% were notified STEP 2: Complete NJHS Application Packet (Due: Tuesday, December 23) Accomplishment form Recommendation forms (3) Community Service Record Obligations You will be expected to maintain an average grade of 93.0% or higher. You will need to maintain good attendance throughout the school year. You will need to continue to have outstanding behavior. Continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership and character.
