We think relationships matter.
A close community makes learning more meaningful. Maybe
you’ve heard of the “ivory tower.” We’ve never seen one on our
campus. Our professors are both accessible and without ego.
Maybe because they are as passionate about teaching as they
are about research. Possibly because they run every classroom,
not TAs.
Perhaps it’s due to our intimate class size (25 students on average). We just think it’s easier to learn from someone you can
easily engage in conversation.
Each Capital student is individually advised by a faculty member who helps with class selection, changing majors, internships, references and jobs.

Eat well.
Study hard.
Our dining options satisfy every type of student – from the
picky eater to the most discerning palate. Have a fresh organic
salad or a slice of pizza and fries. Stir-fry or made-fromscratch soup. Feeling a little homesick? Parents can send in
their favorite home-cooked recipes, and we’ll choose some
to prepare for dinner (we’ll post the student’s name for all to
see, too). And, whether you prefer three square meals a day or
something more flexible, there’s an affordable meal plan that
fits your schedule.
The Blackmore Library is one of the busiest places on campus
(but also the quietest). It is packed with information to
satisfy any research project and study carrels for last-minute
cramming types and those who like to stay ahead. The library’s
staff is on hand to help students navigate the stacks. You’ll
also find the Office of Information Technology here, filled with
computer-savvy people ready to help. There’s a computer
lab here (as well as in every residence hall), which means it
won’t take a thousand dollar investment just to write a paper
on Macbeth. If you have your own laptop, study outdoors
– our wireless Internet lets you tackle those tough research
assignments from anywhere on campus.
Stay fit.
The Capital Center is a state-of-the art athletic facility where
our varsity athletes work out alongside every other student.
Do cardio on the indoor track or elliptical machines, hit the
weight room, or join a pickup game of basketball. It’s easy to
stay in shape when there’s a world-class facility that’s never too
crowded and sits right next to residence halls and classrooms.
(The only thing you need to provide is the motivation to visit.)

Capital Calls
Columbus Home.
Our city is the 16th largest in the country.
It’s Ohio’s capital. And it’s the headquarters
of many Fortune 500 companies – which
means opportunities aren’t hard to come
by. But it’s not all business. Columbus
has professional sports to watch in every
season. And an arts community that’s
unmatched. Shopping at Easton Town
Center or in the Short North is just minutes
from campus. And nearby parks, trails,
museums and a zoo, all just waiting to be
explored.
Welcome to the Neighborhood.
Our suburb is an escape from the city, but it’s only minutes away.
Bexley is one of Columbus’ most historic neighborhoods. It’s home to the governor’s
mansion. Main Street is marked with restaurants and coffee houses (like Chipotle and
Starbucks) and an independent theatre. There are tree-lined streets populated by
architecturally stunning homes.
And everything sits just steps away from the residence halls.
A Picturesque Campus.
Capital was founded in 1830, and our history shows on campus.
Mature trees line the paths that connect our impressive academic halls. Under their
branches countless spring classes have been taught, and new friendships have been
forged. Inside our gates lies our complete campus. Athletic facilities, academic and
administration buildings, and student residence halls are all interspersed. You’re
never more than a short walk from wherever you need to go.
(We think it’s how college should be.)

The Capital Center
Built in 2001, The Capital Center is a 126,000-square-foot
recreational and athletic complex that includes a 2,100-seat
arena, Bernlohr Stadium, a 51,000-square-foot multipurpose
forum, a 5,000-square-foot fitness center, and a multitude of
offices, classrooms and hospitality areas.
The 2,100-seat arena is home to the women’s volleyball and
men’s and women’s basketball programs. The arena has a
pair of hospitality suites, a pair of broadcast booths and a
camera booth with approximately 175 chair-back stadium
seats and the remaining bleacher seating. The Capital Center
has been witness to many sold-out crowds in recent history
and served as the host site for the 2009 OAC Women’s
Basketball Final Four and the 2009 NCAA Division III Men’s
Basketball First and Second Rounds.

department also has an office suite with a conference room
and administrative work areas. Like many facilities, it is the
small things that separate the adequate from the memorable.
The Capital Center with its towers of brick and plaster,
terrazzo flooring, hand-painted tile, skylights and enormous
walls of glass not only pays homage to the tradition and
architecture of the university, but also provides a functional
and modern place for Capital to reach new horizons.
Capital’s vision has been simple – to have a center that
is an integral part of university life, encompassing health
and wellness activities, academic programs, intercollegiate
athletics, intramural sports, social activities and community
partnerships. The Capital Center embodies that vision and
is a testament to the dedication, values and commitment to
service of the entire CAP Family. To those past, present and
future members of the CAP Family we only have one thing to
say – Welcome Home.
Functionality and usability are key in the multipurpose
forum, as the infield of the NCAA regulation indoor track has
four courts with lines for basketball, volleyball and tennis.
Suspended from the ceiling is netting that can split the area
into a multitude of configurations for a variety of events, as
well as a pair of hitting cages for baseball, softball and golf.
Part of the forum also makes up 1,200 square feet of the
fitness center with a complete cardiovascular area filled with
treadmills, Stairmasters and a universal unit. The remaining
3,800 square feet of the fitness center is a room complete
with weight training equipment from Hammer Strength.

with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and
a third sport, cross country, became a conference sport in
1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of
women’s sports in 1984. The OAC currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. All 10 of
the OAC institutions were founded in the 19th century and
have long and outstanding academic reputations.
Capital University enters its 85th season as a member of
the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2009-2010. The OAC is the
nation’s third-oldest collegiate athletic conference and from
its beginnings in 1902 has never wavered in its focus on the
entire development of the student-athlete. The conference’s
unparalleled success of all of its members on and off the
playing field has made the OAC one of the nation’s finest college conferences.
While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio
Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes consistently
have enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end
in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs.
Capital University has and continues to embrace the fine
athletic and academic values that make the OAC one of the
finest conferences in the nation.
The OAC is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The
OAC is older than the Rose Bowl, the World Series and even
the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great
Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a
modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC
grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through
the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or
another have been members of the OAC. Currently, the conference consists of 10 members: Baldwin-Wallace College,
Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum
University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and
Wilmington College.

NEW FACES MAKE GREAT STRIDES FOR MEN’S BASKETBALL
by Bryan DeArdo
During a season full of twists and turns befitting a roller coaster ride, the Capital men’s basketball team rode the wave to a 16-11 record and a third place
finish in the OAC.
After an inauspicious 1-5 start, the Crusaders showed their revolve by winning 15 of their last 21 games under 2010 OAC Coach of the Year Damon Goodwin.
The young, but talented squad was looking to replace seven seniors and 11 letterwinners that departed from the previous season. Stepping up as a
leader for the club was junior DJ Frazier (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow HS) and senior Ben McGrath (Cincinnati, Ohio/Princeton HS).
Frazier garnered All-OAC First Team honors after finishing among the league leaders in rebounding, assists, steals, blocks, assist-to-turnover ration, defensive rebounds, and minutes played. Frazier showcased his multi-faceted abilities by leading the team in scoring in nine games and rebounding in 17
contests.
The team’s lone senior, McGrath made the most of his first season as a starter by being named as an All-OAC Honorable Mention performer. McGrath
placed near the top of the conference in assists and assist-to-turnover ration, while becoming the first Crusader in seven seasons to record over 100 assists
in a season with 113.
McGrath was also among the OAC’s most dangerous outside shooters. He connected on 55 treys during the season, including a school-record nine treys
while scoring 34 points in CU’s victory at Kenyon on January 2.
Adding a strong inside presence for Capital was junior Scott Robertson (Berea, Ohio/Berea HS), who partook in his first full season for the Purple and White
after transferring prior to the 2008-09 season. Robertson was third on the team in scoring (11.3 points per game average), third in rebounding, and also
finished fourth in the OAC in field goal percentage (.626).
Two players who epitomized Capital’s emerging young talent were freshmen Spencer Niekamp (St. Henry, Ohio/St. Henry HS) and Anthony Bell (Cincinnati, Ohio/Withrow HS).
Along with averaging 10 points a game, Niekamp was among CU’s best players in free throw shooting (81.3 percent) and in field goal percentage (.548).
Niekamp also paired with McGrath and sophomore Tyler Munro (Lexington, Ohio/Lexington HS) to pose one of the more potent three-point shooting
trios in the conference, with Niekamp finishing second in the conference in three-point efficiency on 40-of-80 attempts from beyond the arc.
Niekamp has a strong close to the regular season, scoring at least 22 points in each of CU’s final two games that included a 27-point effort in Capital’s OAC
Tournament Semifinal matchup with Wilmington.
Bell added a zest and excitement to the Crusaders with his high rising ability on offense and his quick hands on defense. In addition to being on the
receiving end of many alley-oop dunks throughout the year, Bell was also second on the squad in steals with 35.
Munro finished fifth on the squad in scoring and was second on the team with 41 treys. The sophomore posted his best effort in Capital’s 84-73 win over
Baldwin-Wallace in the OAC Tournament Quarterfinal, tallying 17 points and three treys on 6-of-8 shooting from the floor.
Starting six games for the Crusader was junior Adam Johns (St. Marys, Ohio/St. Marys Memorial HS), who finished fourth on the team in scoring while adding a strong presence inside. Johns best game came at home against Thomas More on December 17, as Johns recorded 23 points that jumpstarted CU’s
six-game winning streak after the team lost five of their first six games.
The Crusaders’ strong bench was exemplified by freshman Colin Geaney (Hudson, Ohio/Hudson HS), sophomore Kelly Winter (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Scioto
HS), junior Don Curtis (Hilliard, Ohio/Hilliard Davidson HS), and freshman Michael Sommer (Celina, Ohio/Celina HS).
Geaney was one of the team’s best shooters from the floor (33-of-66 shooting), while Winter delivered energy and intensity leading the point and on
defense as a reserve.
Curtis provided key depth off the bench on both offense and defense, while Sommer started three contests and went a perfect 14-for-14 from the charity
stripe on the year.
Embracing around the team concept and a defensive mindset enabled the Crusaders to rally back from their early season growing paints to post a winning season. Capital posted the league’s top scoring defense (67.8 points permitted a game) as well as field goal defense. Capital’s balanced, smart game
plan was exemplified by them leading the OAC in assists and assist-to-turnover ration.
Among the Crusaders’ marquee wins during the season included their 78-73 victory at No.15 Wilmington on January 13. Frazier spearheaded a group of
four CU players to notch doubles figure in scoring with his 19 points (14 of which came in the second half ), 10 rebounds, five steals, and one assist.
Trailing by as many as 15 points with just under 15 minutes remaining in the game, the Purple and White embarked on a 29-12 run that tied the score at
64-64 with 5:41 left. A basket by Robertson moments later gave CU the lead for good at 68-66 with 4:14 left.

9
After suffering a close loss in an entertaining game at Mount Union 68-66 on January 30, Capital rallied to win five of their next six games.
One of the team’s finest efforts during that stretch came at home in an 82-71 win over Ohio Northern on January 27. Trailing 48-40 after five minutes of
the second half, the Capital men’s basketball team outscored visiting Ohio Northern 42-23 the rest of the way en route to an 82-71 win. McGrath led CU’s
comeback by scoring 14 of Capital’s 19 points during a 19-5 run to give CU a 59-53 lead they would not relinquish with 9:53 remaining. McGrath finished
the game with a game-high 24 points that included 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
Capital also received a solid effort from Frazier, who led the team with five assists and three steals to go with his 17 points. Frazier led the Crusaders’ resurgent defense in the second half, as CU limited the Polar Bears (9-9, 7-4 OAC) to fewer than 32 percent shooting (7-of-22) after halftime.
After dropping two consecutive one-point setbacks at John Carroll and against Wilmington, the Crusaders took their frustrations out on Mount Union on
Senior Day.
Led by McGrath’s 12 points and 10 assists, the Crusaders clinched third place in the OAC tournament with a 65-58 win over the Purple Raiders. Capital’s
lone senior, McGrath has been apart of more career wins (85) over a four-year span than any Crusader in school history.
In a game that epitomized CU’s balanced offensive attack, nine of Capital’s 10 dressed players scored, while six Crusaders recorded at least seven points.
Among Capital’s impact player on the day were Johns and Sommer, who scored 11 and 10 points, respectively. Johns also pulled down eight of CU’s 34
rebounds (compared to 29 for Mount Union).
Utilizing their strong depth and a 16-0 scoring run in the first half, the Crusaders ousted six-seeded Baldwin-Wallace 84-73 in the OAC Tournament Quarterfinal.
With the Yellow Jackets focused on stopping McGrath and Frazier on offense, Munro, Niekamp, and Robertson all scored at least 17 points in the win.
Niekamp tallied 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting, while Robertson recorded a career-high 21 points while adding six rebound and four of CU’s 25 assists.
Capital’s suffocating defense was on full display in the first half, not permitting a Baldwin-Wallace field goal for a span of 6:41 as the Purple and White built
their commanding lead.
Despite a courageous effort, the Crusaders’ season came to a close against Wilmington 75-72 in overtime in the OAC Tournament Semifinal Game.
Niekamp, Frazier, and Robertson led Capital’s gamely effort, with Frazier pacing the team with 10 rebounds to go with his 17 points. Robertson tallied 10
points while pulling down eight of CU’s 39 rebounds.
The 2009-10 Capital men’s basketball team was a young unit that overcame a slew of obstacles to post another strong season that has become a trademark of Goodwin-coached Crusader teams. With most of Capital’s nucleus returning next season, the sky is the limit for the Purple and White in 2010-11.

MOTIVATED CRUSADERS KEEP EYES ON OAC PRIZE IN 2010-11
by Bryan DeArdo
Even though the first tipoff of the season is on November 19, the Capital men’s basketball team laid down the groundwork for the 2010-11 basketball
season six months earlier when the squad embarked on a 10-day trip through Italy. The experience of playing in organized games and touring Italy was
where the Crusaders forged a bond and established a unified goal of making the Ohio Athletic Conference their own this season.
Led by four-time and reigning OAC Coach of the Year Damon Goodwin, the men return most of the talent that saw them win 15 out of their last 21
games to finish 16-11 and third in the conference last season. Capital’s strong finish to the 2009-10 campaign coupled with a 10-day Italy trip that was
successful on several facets has led to the men budding confidence heading into this season.
“The trip to Italy helped our team from a chemistry and a skill standpoint,” said Goodwin, who has led Capital to three OAC Regular Season
championships and one league tournament title in 16 years at Capital. “The guys were able to spend a great amount of time with each other, which has
made this a much closer team. That led to success on the court when we were over there, and playing against so many diverse teams really helped this
team develop and grow.”
One Crusader who has developed into a versatile player as well as a vocal team leader is senior Scott Robertson. The Muskingum transfer made the most
of his first season in the Purple and White by finishing third on the team in scoring and rebounding. The Berea, Ohio product also finished fourth in the
OAC in field goal percentage.
“Scott had a great year, especially when you consider that he did’nt play for two full seasons heading into last year,” said Goodwin. He has not let up in
the preseason, and has become one of the hardest workers I’ve had in our program. “Scott is capable of getting a double-double every night in terms of
points and rebounds. He is relentless.”
A player who has been relentless on both ends of the floor has been fellow senior DJ Frazier. A Division III News Preseason All-America Honorable
Mention selection heading into this season, Frazier was tabbed as an All-OAC First Team performer last season. The Cincinnati native was among the
league leaders in rebounding, assists, steals, blocks, assist-to-turnover ration, defensive rebounds and minutes played last season.
“D.J is a guy who will have the ball in his hands for the most part of the game for us,” Goodwin said of Frazier, who paced Capital with 54 steals last
season. “We will need him to be more of an offensive threat this year and to be able to dominate by scoring along with getting rebounds, assists, steals
and blocks. If DJ can improve on his shooting and become a perimeter threat, he’ll reach a level where he hasn’t been before.”
With Robertson spearheading Capital’s inside game and Frazier running the offense, sophomore Spencer Niekamp will look to platoon Capital’s outside
shooting. Niekamp played an essential role in the men’s second half surge last season by finishing second in the conference in three-point efficiency.
The St. Henry, Ohio native tallied at least 22 points in each of Capital’s final two games, including a 27-point effort in Capital’s OAC Tournament Semifinal
matchup with Wilmington.
“Spencer is one of our best three-point shooters, and has become a better ball handler and a smarter player during the offseason,” said Goodwin. “He’s
still working on his footwork while also focusing on getting bigger and stronger, but he’ll be a heck-of-a player before he graduates.”
The Crusaders are also armed with a strong bench that includes seasoned veterans and young players that can inject an instant energy boost to the
lineup. Senior Adam Johns and junior Kelly Winter epitomize Capital’s leadership off the bench, with both players having OAC and NCAA Tournament
experience under their belts.
“We’re looking for Adam to come off the bench and give us some good minutes,” Goodwin said of Johns, who averaged eight points and three rebounds
a game last season. “He has gotten bigger and stronger this offseason, and also has more confidence heading into this year. Along with Scott, he will be a
perimeter threat and a big low post presence.”
Crusader Basketball

Winter found his role on the squad last season. A student-assistant at Tennessee before transferring to Capital after his freshman season, Winter has been
far more than a volunteer during his time with the Purple and White. Winter routinely added a spark on both ends of the floor last season, while spelling
Frazier and senior Ben McGrath at point guard.
“Kelly has certainly made some strides to this point, and can create havoc with his defensive pressure. He needs to be able to give our guards a blow and
to be ready to be a threat at any situation in a game,” Goodwin said.
One player that will continue to bolster the Crusader attack will be sophomore Anthony Bell. A teammate of Frazier’s at Cincinnati’s Withrow High School,
the duo reunited in Bexley last winter and immediately spearheaded one of the most lethal transition games in the OAC. Along with being on the
receiving end of several alley-oop passes from his high school teammate last season, Bell emulated Frazier by finishing second behind him with 35 steals.
“Anthony is a kid who sees the floor, create plays, and can dominate without scoring a bunch,” said Goodwin. “A big goal for him this year is to play more
disciplined and to focus more on hitting that 12-to-15-foot shot.”
Other returning Crusaders looking to make an impact include junior Tyler Munro and sophomore Michael Sommer.
Munro will team with Niekamp to forge a formidable outside shooting combination. The Lexington, Ohio native looks to emulate his sharp shooting
accuracy from beyond the arc last winter. Sommer also looks to mirror his .500 shooting percentage from a year ago and to solidify his position as one of
Capital’s better mid range scorers.
Goodwin is embracing the opportunity to lead a team and build a game plan around many talented players.
“We’re going to have to utilize our athleticism and quickness in ways we have not done before,” Goodwin said. “With any good team you have, there’s a
certain point in the season where everything comes together. The sooner that point comes for us the better off we are going to be.”
Goodwin also hopes that this team realizes its goal that was established half a year ago in Europe.
“This program does have a tradition and mentality to it that we are going to compete for championships. It’s this team’s turn to add to that tradition and
to add to that history.”

Damon Goodwin has patroled the sidelines as head men’s basketball coach at Capital University
beginning since the 1994-1995 season. He has established the Crusaders as one of the elite
programs in not only the Ohio Athletic Conference but all of the NCAA Division III.
The Crusaders enjoyed their best season in program history in 2008-2009 as Goodwin guided
Capital to a school-record 26 victories and a berth in the NCAA Round of 16. Capital made its
third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament and was nationally ranked throughout the entire
regular season; reaching a program-record mark of No. 5 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Capital
had the best home record in the Great Lakes Region at 15-0 and hosted the first and second
rounds of the NCAA Tournament at The Capital Center. Goodwin also mentored the OAC Player
of the Year, two All-OAC First Team selections and the first back-to-back consensus All-America
honoree in school history. For his efforts, Goodwin was named Great Lakes Region Coach of the
Year by the National Association of Basketball Coaches.
In 2007-2008, Goodwin led Capital to its second straight Ohio Athletic Conference regular season
title and second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Crusaders also won 24 games with
the OAC Player of the Year and the first All-American since 1988. Goodwin claimed OAC Coach of
the Year honors for a second straight season and third time in his career.
Other highlights of Goodwin’s tenure on the bench include an NCAA Tournament appearance and OAC Coach of the Year honors in just his second
season at Capital in 1996-97. In 2001-2002, he led Capital to a then school-record 23 wins, while in 2002-03 he brought the school its first OAC
regular season title in 19 seasons. He is only the second coach in school history to win over 200 games.
Prior to arriving at Capital, he served five seasons as an assistant coach at Wittenberg. During his tenure, the Tigers won five North Coast Athletic
Conference titles, earned four NCAA Tournament bids, including a final four appearance in 1994.
The St. Marys, Ohio, native earned first team All-Ohio honors at St. Marys Memorial High School in 1982, before attending the University of Dayton.
Goodwin helped lead the Flyers to NCAA Tournament appearances in 1984 and 1985 where the eventual national champion (Georgetown and
Villanova) eliminated them each season. Upon graduating from Dayton, Goodwin was selected in the seventh round (147th overall) of the NBA
draft by the Phoenix Suns. He spent the summer out west before returning that fall to begin his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Dayton.
Goodwin’s first head coaching job was a two-year stint at Fairborn High School in Fairborn, Ohio, before joining the staff at Wittenberg.
Goodwin, who also is Capital’s assistant men’s and women’s cross country coach, resides in Hilliard, Ohio, with his wife, Danielle, and their
three children, Grant, Addison and Dane.

Regan won his one and only OAC title in his
first season as head coach in 1956-57. Capital also made its first NCAA Tournament
appearance in 1957.
Overall
(1921-23)
Although Bernlohr coached only two
seasons he may have had the greatest
contribution of any coach, convincing his
brother Bill to attend Capital leading to a
lifelong association between the family
and Capital.

CAPITAL BASKETBALL IN EUROPE
Every three years, the NCAA allows college teams to take an international trip. In Spring 2007, the Crusaders traveled on a 10-day, five-game tour of
Great Britain and Ireland. In 2004, the men’s basketball team went to Europe with a visit to Spain. Capital returned to Europe this past Spring on a
10-day trip from May 9-19 to Italy. The Crusaders played four games while touring Milan, Venice, Florence and Rome.
