When there are strong feelings on both sides of an issue, how does the church function to make sense of the difficult and event contentious issues? The main way that this has been done is through a time of Holy Conferencing. This means that the church gathers together under the guidance of God to listen to one another and to prayerfully consider how to proceed. Recently our church engaged in an all church holy conferencing event to listen to one another and to God regarding the way that we might respond to a difficult situation. The process that we followed was structured around a simple prayer acrostic known as ACTS: Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, and Supplication. Through this process, every person was able to share their concerns, fears, and frustrations. It is fitting that this process is known as ACTS, because it is in the book of Acts that we find a description of how the early church worked through one of its biggest conflicts over ways Continued on Page 2 . . . Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Hebrew 10:24 JUNE Highlights Pg. 2 - Summer Studies Pg. 3 - Relay for Life Missions Pg. 5 - Special Day for Prayer? In this meeting, James the brother of Jesus, stood up and by the guidance of the Holy Spirit, arbitrated between the two factions. When a just resolution was agreed upon, the church celebrated a new unity and ministry among the gentiles. This example demonstrates that the church has consistently faced tough challenges by way of Holy conferencing. The United Methodist Church is structured in such a way so as to provide for an annual conference (every year), and a General Conference (every four years). The General Conference was held this past month in Portland Oregon. It was a particularly contentious conference as the church is struggling to consider the best ways to respond to the inclusion of LGBT persons. The conclusion of the conference was to establish a team of Bishops and elected lay and clergy people to further explore this issue and present some resolutions at the next General Conference. Our church will be sending four delegates to the Annual Conference, June 16 - 18th, to consider the issues facing our conference that represents Southern California, Hawaii, Guam and Saipan. There will be much prayer, study, and debate during this conference to discern God’s will for the future of the UMC in our region. Please be in prayer of Hilde Garrison, Marcia Galland, Bob and Susan Ross as they attend this conference together. We look forward to hearing from this and learning about their experience in this opportunity for Holy Conferencing. Pastor David NEW! Summer Studies! Be sure to bring in the “Mission Time Cards” on Sunday June 12th, so we can celebrate the many ways that we are in ministry locally. CHIMES JUNE 2016 page 4 UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Eve Circle For many years Eve Circle has supported Jackson Area Ministries. Maybe you remember collecting vegetable seeds to help families provide fresh produce. We all know this is a necessary part of any diet. This year $50.00 was sent in the absence of seed packets with this result. A note of thanks which is shared with you for this support. “Your contribution will help us provide seeds to over 3000 families in our area. Seed potato distribution has been accomplished. Vegetable seeds and tomato plants are scheduled for distribution May 9th. Space is very limited sometimes and innovative solutions with raised beds and use of flower beds speaks to the creative problem solving. Middle school students are working each afternoon to start seeds in greenhouse trays and design their garden.” Jackson Area Ministries Resource and Training Center Jackson, Ohio. Please pray for their area to experience a productive growing season. - Marcia Galland # # # # # # # # # # CELEBRATE! In fact the median church size is only 75 persons. Being a small church is nothing to be ashamed of, in fact there are incredible strengths that a small church provide that larger churches can not. This past month representatives from our congregation attended a training for those leading a small church (under 200 in worship attendance), so that we might learn how to capitalize on these strengths. Consider this short list of strengths: Smaller churches do a better job of recruiting new leaders. Smaller churches allow opportunities for people to try new things. Smaller churches allow people to develop new skills. Smaller churches provide better connection and caring between members. Smaller churches can respond more quickly to the needs of individuals. Smaller churches can provide for a specific niche in a community. Being a small church is not a problem. Our church continues to score very high on its vitality markers of reaching new people, nurturing discipleship, and serving the community. We have everything to be proud of as we continue to serve God together. chimes JUNE 2016 page 8 NEWS FROM THE CHAMPIONS Finally! Sue’s 2nd request for a work visa was approved! Now we continue pursuing official business status. Once this step is completed and the facility prepared, we can start in a month or two. Next we must apply for an educational license and that means an additional 12-18 months. When granted, we can provide the highest quality education to our students. Chris has an opportunity to work with a local pastor in a discipleship and mentoring program. He will be helping to get it started and, with this pastor, growing in the Lord. Our individual adult students are really learning and growing in faith. We ask that you pray for Alex, Igor, Irina, Max, Alla, Alyona, Guri and Olga. For several years, Sue has been working with Alla, who comes from an alcoholic family. She has struggled with believing in God’s unconditional love. In the last month Alla shared that He spoke to her in a dream, that He loved her and He hugged her. She awoke feeling God’s love and presence, that life was now going to be different. What a breakthrough! With springtime it’s crazy here. Our students work SO hard. Because it is so difficult to gain admission to universities, they study very diligently and often exist on only 2-3 hours of sleep. The highest grades mean free education and a small monthly stipend. Several of our “Slobs on a Bus” actors are just one year away from university. Since time with them is limited, we want to do something really special. That means a Performance Trip to America! Central and Southern California, look for us in March 2017. A lot yet to do, planning, rehearsing, perfecting English. Plus raising travel expenses, obtaining visas, finding homestays and developing a performance schedule. Biggest challenge? Time! “Slobs on a Bus” - CHIMES JUNE 2016 page 5 MONTHLY FOOD DRIVE Missions and Outreach Moments … “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink .” - Matthew 25: 35 The Mission committee seeks your input deciding food drive themes for the coming months. We also are looking for a new location for food collection. Contact the office with your suggestions. A Special Day for Prayer? The weekly prayer meetings in the pastor’s office will be transitioning into a new monthly format. This means that everyone will be invited to participate in a time of prayer, meditation, and singing together on the first Friday of every month at 10 am in the Pastor’s office. What are we going to do on the other Fridays? The other Friday mornings in the month, the Care Ministry Team will meet to focus on responding the to care needs of the congregation and community. Those who are interested in being part of the new Care Ministry Team should contact Pastor David. FOOD, FRIENDS & FAITH Weekly Dinner Outreach Ministry With the Temple City Coalition for the Homeless we are continuing to host a weekly dinner event. As part of our church’s ministry we serve food and fellowship Sunday evenings at 7pm here in Fellowship Hall. Biblical reflection and other expressions of faith are shared. It has been a rewarding path to reaching the disenfranchised population. The Outreach Committee has established an account for donations to help defray costs. Join us in service by contributing time, food and funds to grow and maintain this vital, rewarding ministry. Contact Pastor David for more information. Memorial Day Election Day
