9 $ ! " # $ " According to an existing assumption, the press coverage had an
important influence on the international ozone regime building.
Nowadays people involved in the climate change dispute
complain a misinformation caused by a surfeit of press coverage.
How does the media coverage on environmental problems
function? Has the press coverage of environmental problems
changed?
The main point of this examination was to figure out, if there are
differences between the media coverage of climate change and
ozone hole.

This study is based on investigations of newspapers, television
broadcasts and interviews with journalists.

The press coverage of the ozone
hole had a significant higher
frequentness of mentions, which
classified
the
environmental
problem as anthropogenic. The
press coverage of climate change
had a high rate of neutral mentions.

In the climate change coverage,
pictured scenarios are significantly
more often used than in the ozone
hole coverage.

The data pool of this study consists of articles from the Swiss
Media Database archive. Considered were articles from three
Swiss newspapers: “Tagesanzeiger”, “NZZ” and “BLICK”, found
by specific keywords. For the press coverage of the ozone hole
articles from 1974 to 1990 were regarded and for the climate
change those from 1993 to 2001.
The following questions were analysed:
• Is the anthropogenic cause of the problem
accepted?
• Which solutions (technological / economical /
political) are recommended and which are
dismissed?
• Which arguments are used to support or reject a
regulation?
• Which organisations are mentioned as source of
information and arguments?
• Are uncertainties or certitudes concerning the
problem and its effects mentioned?
• style and form

Health was mentioned significantly
more often in the ozone hole
coverage (skin cancer) .
We interviewed scientific journalists of the examined journals and telecasts.
The intention of these interviews was to get the opinion of the journalists.
