JOB DESCRIPTION Youth Support Worker Service: Responsible to: Grade: Hours: Location: 1, Wansdyke Play Association Community Outreach Worker NJC Scale Point 5, £20,253-£22,212 pro rata Minimum of 3 hours per week on a regular Thursday evening, term time only, plus other work available (initially until 31st March 2018 with the likelihood of a further year) Midsomer Norton and local area Main purpose of the job To be actively involved in face-to-face youth work with young people aged 11-17 years, at Norton Youth Club and other possible locations, in a way that meets the needs of young people and the community of Midsomer Norton and surrounding area and to identify the needs and interests of young people and contribute to appropriate programmes and curriculum to meet them. 2. Main Duties and Responsibilities To work with young people and staff in order to establish positive relationships; to identify and address young people’s interests and needs within available resources. A flexible approach is required. To contribute to the planning, delivery and evaluation of programmes designed to meet the interests and needs of young people. This is to be done in a way that encourages and supports them to take a full and active part in the decision-making processes involved. To make an effective contribution to the capacity of the club to deliver youth work, which is educative, empowering, participative and fun and which also reflects equality of opportunity and diversity in all regards. Also to make young people aware of the positive activities and opportunities and support available to them via partner agencies. To keep the required youth work and other recordings and carry out monitoring and evaluation of the youth work taking place as required. To establish supportive and effective working relationships with other staff and work as an effective team member within WPA youth work. In fulfilling the main tasks, to adhere to the procedures and policies as required in order to comply with Wansdyke Play Association’s management committee policies and legal requirements e.g. confidentiality, health & safety, child protection, safeguarding, equality and diversity and financial regulations. Any concerns should be brought to the attention of the Manager. To contribute to the development of relationships with community groups and other agencies if required. The post holder may be required to undertake additional duties commensurate with this level of post. 3. Personal Development Regular supervision will take place as reflected in WPA’s supervision policy. The contracted hours include a requirement to attend meetings, supervision and training, which will be notified in advance. 4. Decision Making The post holder will have delegated powers with respect to operational aspects of the youth work when acting as Staff Member in Charge. Any matters of concern/development should be discussed and agreed with the line manager and/or the Manager. 5. Contacts and Relationships The post holder will: Work with young people aged 11-19 years Other agencies/organisations as appropriate Management and the local community Liaise with: appropriate statutory and voluntary organisations. Be a member of: Wansdyke Play Association staff team General To wear appropriate clothing for youth work and a willingness to wear the agreed Community Play Team uniform when required otherwise. Due to the nature of the work a good level of physical health is expected. The post holder may be required to travel across an area where public transport is not easily available, particularly out of business hours. It is the nature of the work of WPA that tasks and responsibilities are in many circumstances unpredictable and varied. All staff are, therefore, expected to work in a flexible way when the occasion arises and that tasks, not specifically covered in their job description have to be undertaken. These additional duties will normally be to cover unforeseen circumstances or changes in work and will normally be compatible with the regular type of work. If the additional responsibility or task becomes regular or frequent part of the staff member’s job, it may be included in the youth worker job description in consultation with the member of staff. The post holder is required to work evenings and occasional weekends/week days as relevant. The post requires an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory completion of a 3 month probationary period.
