a. Carmen comes from Temple in the IDEA office where she’s currently doing
engagement work.
b. She will arrive 8/1 and her office will be on the first floor in Babbitt
Administrative Center (BAC).
c. She will hit the ground running with meetings.
d. Priscilla asked that we wait to request her attend meetings until she’s on
contract.
i. We would like to invite her to our September meeting, or August if that’s
possible. Lauren and Chris will reach out to her after August 1 st.
III.
Looking Ahead: Things to think about for upcoming year
a. We will allocate the August meeting to working on our priorities for the coming
year. Bring topics to next meeting.
b. We need to have articulated information to provide to Carmen regarding the
Diversity Strategic Plan so that our concerns are addressed.
c. Reconstituting CDAD Executive Committee
i. Discussion: What is the Executive Committee (EC)?
1. Lauren read the section of the bylaws pertaining to the EC to the
group.
2. Essentially, one reason to have the EC is to have more CDAD
members feel like they participate in a hands-on way.
3. As commissions have evolved it seems more important for
collaboration and collectivity.
4. Before CDAD was a commission it was the ADA committee and
certain people from identified offices attended.
a. Some of that has now dropped off.
5. Would it serve us to have working groups focused on certain
areas instead of an EC?
PO Box 4142
Flagstaff, AZ 86011-4142
(928) 523-0708 (fax)
a. In the past we had a CDAD strategic plan with 3 specific
areas of focus: UD, curriculum, and disability awareness.
6. An EC or working groups can help to spread the work out and add
additional voices in planning and direction the work of the
commission.
ii. We will revisit this for the August meeting and call for a vote at that time.
d. CDAD strategic planning and partnerships for 2016-2017
i. NAU 4 All, TASH, or other student connections
1. President Cheng has interest in us working with students.
2. First Year Seminar? Chris has not focused on this, it’s on the
backburner right now.
3. Learning community with social work.
a. Kathy Mahosky and Natalie
b. This could be a good way to increase NAU 4 All
participation and keep this group going.
c. Dorianne is interested in working with NAU 4 All
4. TASH – Jody is no longer their advisor, not sure who the new
advisor is yet
5. Students in DIS minor may be a good recruiting base for NAU 4 All
as well
6. Can we create a specific listserv for students through DR?
7. Priscilla said that the Center will create marketing for the
commissions to the entire campus.
a. Will create a way for people to opt-in to information about
commissions
ii. Commission collaboratives
1. Collaborative work with other commissions
2. New Directions collaboration among the commissions has been
successful
3. How can CDAD engage with the other commissions?
4. What happened to the council?
a. It still exists, Carmen will take that over
i. Right now it’s still just the co-chairs, but a new
model could be created
b. This is a good way to have collaborative discussions with
other commissions
i. But the council works best if we have concrete
ideas about how we’d like to collaborate
iii. Focusing priorities
1. Disability Heritage Month
a. Beth Haller will be on campus October 19th
i. She will work with journalism students as well as
going to Matthew’s classes
ii. Would like to set up a meet and greet before her
talk at 4:00 p.m. The topic is on disability and social

media. Would like to use the SAS auditorium for
her talk if possible.
b. A play that was first produced in the spring will have a
second showing specifically for DHM as a part of Theatre
of the Oppressed
c. Hopefully the NAU debate team will participate again
d. NAU 4 All scavenger hunt
e. Possibly a film?
i. Jason said that he would investigate the possibility
of having a film festival come to Flag/Sedona film
fest or campus
1. He is going to ask about cost and logistics
2. This will probably be something for next
year
f. Matthew has been working on new modules looking at
issues involving disability. Two will be done by the fall. We
can promote them during DHM
i. The first is on “inspiration porn” the idea that the
public gets inspiration from people with disabilities
1. They plan to put the completed modules on
the institutional BB Learn shell so that they
are available to all faculty
g. Matthew suggested a name change to DHM to add the
word “Pride” – Disability Heritage and Pride Month
i. We will discuss and vote in August
2. Climate Survey action and response
3. Disability Studies minor
4. What else?
IV.
Updates
a. Campus mapping project
i. Chris and Lauren are presenting about the campus map project at the
AHEAD conference in July. Have found a new collaborator.
b. construction, concrete, and capital projects
i. Pedway project has begun. The design is very innovative. The pedestrian
areas will be on the edges with the bike lanes in the middle. The bike
lanes will be a dark colored concrete and the pedestrian areas will be a
lighter color. There will also be a tactile strip placed at the transition
between the pedestrian area and the bike lanes so there will not only be
color contrast but also texture contrast.
V. Other business
a. The Center’s website has a calendar that will function as a one-stop for diversity
related events across campus.
b. 2017 is the 50th anniversary of IHD. They are working on event planning now.
c. There is no July meeting
