Approval of minutes from May meeting – Matthew W. moved, Dori seconded, all in favor, approved II. Update on new Chief Diversity Officer, Carmen Phelps (Priscilla) a. Carmen comes from Temple in the IDEA office where she’s currently doing engagement work. b. She will arrive 8/1 and her office will be on the first floor in Babbitt Administrative Center (BAC). c. She will hit the ground running with meetings. d. Priscilla asked that we wait to request her attend meetings until she’s on contract. i. We would like to invite her to our September meeting, or August if that’s possible. Lauren and Chris will reach out to her after August 1 st. III. Looking Ahead: Things to think about for upcoming year a. We will allocate the August meeting to working on our priorities for the coming year. Bring topics to next meeting. b. We need to have articulated information to provide to Carmen regarding the Diversity Strategic Plan so that our concerns are addressed. c. Reconstituting CDAD Executive Committee i. Discussion: What is the Executive Committee (EC)? 1. Lauren read the section of the bylaws pertaining to the EC to the group. 2. Essentially, one reason to have the EC is to have more CDAD members feel like they participate in a hands-on way. 3. As commissions have evolved it seems more important for collaboration and collectivity. 4. Before CDAD was a commission it was the ADA committee and certain people from identified offices attended. a. Some of that has now dropped off. 5. In the past we had a CDAD strategic plan with 3 specific areas of focus: UD, curriculum, and disability awareness. 6. An EC or working groups can help to spread the work out and add additional voices in planning and direction the work of the commission. ii. We will revisit this for the August meeting and call for a vote at that time. d. CDAD strategic planning and partnerships for 2016-2017 i. NAU 4 All, TASH, or other student connections 1. President Cheng has interest in us working with students. 2. First Year Seminar? Chris has not focused on this, it’s on the backburner right now. 3. Learning community with social work. a. Kathy Mahosky and Natalie b. This could be a good way to increase NAU 4 All participation and keep this group going. c. Dorianne is interested in working with NAU 4 All 4. TASH – Jody is no longer their advisor, not sure who the new advisor is yet 5. Students in DIS minor may be a good recruiting base for NAU 4 All as well 6. Can we create a specific listserv for students through DR? 7. Priscilla said that the Center will create marketing for the commissions to the entire campus. a. Will create a way for people to opt-in to information about commissions ii. Commission collaboratives 1. Collaborative work with other commissions 2. New Directions collaboration among the commissions has been successful 3. How can CDAD engage with the other commissions? 4. What happened to the council? a. It still exists, Carmen will take that over i. Right now it’s still just the co-chairs, but a new model could be created b. This is a good way to have collaborative discussions with other commissions i. But the council works best if we have concrete ideas about how we’d like to collaborate iii. Focusing priorities 1. Disability Heritage Month a. Beth Haller will be on campus October 19th i. She will work with journalism students as well as going to Matthew’s classes ii. Would like to use the SAS auditorium for her talk if possible. b. A play that was first produced in the spring will have a second showing specifically for DHM as a part of Theatre of the Oppressed c. Hopefully the NAU debate team will participate again d. NAU 4 All scavenger hunt e. Possibly a film? i. Jason said that he would investigate the possibility of having a film festival come to Flag/Sedona film fest or campus 1. He is going to ask about cost and logistics 2. This will probably be something for next year f. Matthew has been working on new modules looking at issues involving disability. Two will be done by the fall. We can promote them during DHM i. The first is on “inspiration porn” the idea that the public gets inspiration from people with disabilities 1. They plan to put the completed modules on the institutional BB Learn shell so that they are available to all faculty g. Matthew suggested a name change to DHM to add the word “Pride” – Disability Heritage and Pride Month i. We will discuss and vote in August 2. Climate Survey action and response 3. Disability Studies minor 4. What else? IV. Updates a. Campus mapping project i. Chris and Lauren are presenting about the campus map project at the AHEAD conference in July. Have found a new collaborator. b. construction, concrete, and capital projects i. Pedway project has begun. The design is very innovative. The pedestrian areas will be on the edges with the bike lanes in the middle. The bike lanes will be a dark colored concrete and the pedestrian areas will be a lighter color. There will also be a tactile strip placed at the transition between the pedestrian area and the bike lanes so there will not only be color contrast but also texture contrast. V. Other business a. The Center’s website has a calendar that will function as a one-stop for diversity related events across campus. b. 2017 is the 50th anniversary of IHD. They are working on event planning now. c.
