General A degree programme is a coherent programme of study leading to the award of a degree at first or second cycle level. At first cycle level, the degree programme will lead to the award of a university diploma or a bachelor’s degree while at second cycle level, the programme will lead to a master’s degree (one or two year). Decisions to establish a new degree programme will be approved by the University board following a proposal from the faculty board concerned. The faculty committee for First and Second Cycle Levels will draft the proposal and refer the application to the faculty board. Review process The school(s) will submit an application for the establishment of a new degree programme to the committee concerned for first and second cycle programmes. The application should be signed by the head (s) of school(s) concerned. In the application it should be clearly stated which school should be the ‘host’ school for the programme. The application should include an analysis carried out in accordance with the committees’ criteria as well as a proposal for a degree programme syllabus. The application should be submitted to the committee for first and second cycle level concerned for further drafting by the faculty board. Administrators from the Faculty Office will present the agenda item to the University board Instructions for applications relating to the establishment of a new degree programme Criteria to be evaluated The following criteria should be included in the application: General information • The designated title of the programme in Swedish and English as well as its scope in terms of higher education credits. • The level of the programme ie what degree the programme will lead to • The geographical placement of the studies and study format (full-time / part-time /campus/ distance mode etc) 2 (5) • • • • • • • A general presentation of the programme and arguments for its establishment An analysis of the target group: what group of students is the programme intended for? What does the situation look like with regards to student recruitment / expected number of applicants per place? Describe the programme’s relationship to the future labour market ie provide some sort of assessment of employability /usefulness etc The relationship of the programme to other degree programmes at Linnaeus University Analysis of competitors- what other similar degree programmes are on offer at other universities and where are they? Will the degree programme compete with other programmes internallly? Planned dimensioning: how many students will be admitted per academic year? Teacher qualifications and expertise • What teacher expertise will be available on the programme (in terms of subject knowledge / artistic-creative development / pedagogical background)? • What type of in-service training would be planned for teaching staff? • Is there a need for new recruitment of teachers for the programme? Facilities and equipment • Is there a special need for facilities and equipment and if so, how will this need be addressed? Organisation and contents of the degree programme • How can we guarantee that the contents and format for the programme and examination formats will lead to the fulfillment of the goals and directives of the degree? • How can we guarantee close ties between the degree programme and research? • What are the possibilities for any work placements? or internships • What sort of work is happening on the internationalisation front with regards to the programme ie international perspectives in the degree programme? • What opportunities will the students have for studies abroad and what would be the most suitable time to pursue them within the programme? • Student influence- how can this be guaranteed? 3 (5) • • • • • What are the possibilities for cooperative ventures involving the surrounding community? How can work with the following aspects be incorporated into the programme: equal opportunities, diversity, sustainable development and ethics? Are there any other perspectives which need to be taken into consideration with regards to the programme? How can stability and long-term thinking be guaranteed? What possibilities are there for transition to studies at a higher level? Quality assurance work • How can quality assurance work be safeguarded in the programme? Degree programme syllabus There should be a degree programme syllabus produced for all degree programmes. The degree programme syllabus will be ratified following approval by the University board of the establishment of the programme. A proposal for the degree programme syllabus should however be attached along with the application. The degree programme syllabus should be written in accordance with the approved outlines and instructions approved by the rector. Approval Decisions relating to the establishment of a new degree programme will be made by the University board following a proposal by the faculty board concerned. 4 (5) Beslutat av: Beslutsdatum: Dnr: 5 (5)
