E
ver since the mid-20th century self-esteem has posed an enigma to
mental health professionals about the basis of self-esteem, how to raise
it, and when or why self-esteem needs raising in the first place. However,
the insights of evolutionary psychology may provide a new theory that has
the power to resolve these bewildering and frustrating quandaries. Viewing
self-esteem as a human instinct (like play, bonding, or falling in love) provides
a way of understanding what self-esteem is, as well as an organized format
for therapeutic intervention.
