Coor dinat ing globa l research for wheat Dear colleagues, Wheat Initiative NUE Workshop An NUE Workshop, organised by the Wheat Initiative Expert Working Group on NUE, will be held at Aubrey Park Hotel, Hemel Hempstead (http://www.aubreypark.co.uk/) (near to London, UK) from 16th - 17th May 2017. (http://www.wheatinitiative.org/events/nutrient-use-efficiency-workshop) The scientific organisers are Malcolm Hawkesford, Jacques Le Gouis and Ivan OrtizMonasterio. This workshop will focus on NUE in a broad sense, and will include all macro and micro nutrients, spanning crop genetics, physiology and agronomy in wheat and other crops whose research is potentially linked to wheat, e.g. rice, barley, other cereals. Global participation is particularly important, and we welcome all participants, especially those from developing countries to attend. The Wheat Initiative and its NUE Expert Working group hope to assist in partially supporting some participant costs for the meeting. However, participants will initially be responsible for their own costs. Key points The aim is to formulate the outline for a future International NUE initiative aimed at funding collaborative projects Brainstorming and prioritising ideas on NUE (build on output from Obregon EWG meeting) (See links on http://www.wheatinitiative.org/activities/expert-workinggroups/nutrient-use-efficiency-wheat for minutes and presentations) Identifying synergies, gaps and opportunities which an initiative could address Aligning activities and research where possible Understanding the user community by engaging with industry (not just breeders) Involvement of funding agencies Map current investment in participating countries on NUE topics Looking for added value of consortia This meeting will last for one and a half days of meeting, and on the final afternoon you will have the opportunity to visit Classical Experiments, the Phenotyping Platform and laboratories at Rothamsted Research. The format of the workshop will comprise of some topic introduction papers followed by round-table discussions. Participants will be selected on basis of a provided abstract describing their research interests and achievements, to be sent before the 18th March).
